I have to travel for 6 hours to the hospital and the surgery is planned for a Thursday, with an overnight stay in hospital do you think I will be ok to travel home on the Friday?

I would think you would be OK. I definitely recommend a pillow for your stomach during the ride.

Thanks Jim, I will take the pillow along. It will be good for me to cry into if I am sore LOL

You'll do fine. This was by far the easiest surgery I ever had and I have certainly had my share. I was up walking the halls with a Nurse two hours after coming out of Surgery.

And be sure to take some pain meds before the trip. Don't wait for the pain to start cause being in pain in a car sucks! Plus stop frequently to walk for a few minutes to help with the gas from surgery.

I would also check with your doctor and see if they see any problems with it.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery.

Are you driving and alone? I wouldn't recommend you driving yourself 6 hours one way? Maybe 1 hour or less? If someone else is driving I'd say OK but have lots of Water and fluids on board.

I also would hope you would have someone with you. I dont think I could have drove 6 hours at one day post op. It would have taken me 18 hours to get home. lol but do stop and get out and walk a lot to prevent blood clots. That is important.

Yep, my doc told me to stop every half hour and walk for about 10 minutes.

So Jim.... How was the pain? I've had a few other surgeries too (back and abdominal) so I'm used to pain but kind of need to be prepared for it.

Honestly the worse part for me was the gas cramps and I think I made the gas cramps even worse by stupidly drinking a lot of apple juice once I was allowed to have liquids. Typical achy left shoulder due to the gas but other than that it was not bad. I had surgery on a Monday and I easily could have gone back to work on Wednesday (I do have an office job where I sit all day)

Thanks for all the support and info, especially Jim who has been a wealth of information, I really do appreciate your posts. I had telephonic contact with my surgeon today and can't wait for the 21st March.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
