Tonight I was washing the dishes and I was like wow these look so big and to think I used to eat of them 8 months ago and even go back for seconds scared me. There is no way I could eat the amount of food that goes on normal plates these days and they looked so alien to me compared to my own little plates and bowls.

Yesterday we went out for my sons 18 th birthday, I ordered prawns on saffron rice, the plate was huge, I couldn't bring myself to eat from it and had to transfer a couple of prawns and about two tablespoons of the the rice onto the smaller plate then I felt comfortable eating. Amazing how 8 months eating on smaller plates becomes a comfortable habit.

I buy the small dixy plates at costco, just eaiser for me and my husband than washing, yea were lazy...lol

He had gastric bypass and I had the band so between both of us we dont even eat a whole meal. If we ever go out to eat we spilt 1 meal, that is if we both want the same thing other than that we explain our situation to the hostess and they always let us order kids meals.

We have actually taken out all of our large plates and bowls and have exchanged them for smaller ones. We also bough some kids divided plates from the Dollar Store that I use for my meals. Both my husband and I came to the conclusion that there is no need for the large plates anymore. When I go out for dinner at a restaurant I always ask for a to-go box as soon as my food comes out and put at least half if not more in there right away. Out of sight, out of mind is my motto. It is amazing how your perspectives change.

I can relate...the other evening as I was rinsing plates and silverware for the dishwasher, the regular sized dinner plate and regular fork that my husband had used seemed huge to me, as I have used a smaller salad plate and smaller dessert fork for over a year now.

Sometimes you have to experience these epiphany moments to realize just how far you have come along your journey towards health!

My family has eaten off of salad plates for years, and after banding I found some "dipping bowls" that are my dishes now.

I have a habit if we eat Mexican I will get one of the little salsa bowls and put rice and cheese in it so I don't go overboard.

I tend to use my son's plates from Ikea they are little plastic colorful see through plates and then only put about 1/4 to 1/2 of food one there. If I don't I serve way too much and then never eat it anyways. But omg is it amazing to think about how I used to eat! I was going over with my husband the calories in fast food and used to eat it a few times a day!!

starting weight 287.6 current weight 234.8

Thats funny that you ask for a to go box as soon as your food gets there, my husband does the same thing and it drives me nuts. I tell him, can I please get a few bits in before they bring the box...lol

I made a big deal out of going out and buying smaller plates a few weeks before surgery. We started using them right away. My roommate and son are on board and we all use them know.

Me too! I look at the full sized dinner plates and now wonder "how did I ever eat off that big plate!" Or " no wonder Americas are over weight...look at the big plate!."

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
