Too much protein??

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to get in too much Protein? I planned all my meals for tomorrow and am getting 98grams of protein and 990 calories. I am suppose to get in 80 protein. This probably sounds silly, but is there a problem with too much protein?

My nutritionist told me that the body can only process about 30 grams of Protein per meal. I use that as a guideline for my meal planning.

Too much Protein can cause kidney problems, but how much is too much, I can't help you with.

I googled it before banding, so I stick to my 60grs Nut told me to, sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less.

I majored in nutrition in college (about 5 classes short of my BS tho). I remember learning that whatever your body can't process, you end up peeing out. So all those body builders who load up on more Protein are litterallyputting it down the toilet!

I do know you can have too much Protein and if your more susceptible it can cause major kidney problems. Because high Protein also tends to be high fat, you can see a spike in your cholesterol from it, too.

Years ago I tried Atkins and while I did lose, I also ended up in the hospital with a major kidney infection. I was told there was a build up of protein in my kidneys that caused it.

Mind you, I'm the exception not the rule, but too much protein can cause problems. It's always best to have your doctor run a blood panel and check your urine if you have any concerns or doubts.

Here's a simple formula to figure out how much Protein you need:

How to Calculate Your Protein Needs:

1. Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg

2. Weight in kg x 0.8gm/kg = protein gm

So if you weigh 200 pounds, it would be

200 / 2.2= 90

90 x 0.8= 72g of protein per day

Last week our dr ran our support group. He said women need on average 45 grams a day. The reason you need more after surgery is because your body is trying to heal.

I would love to know what you are eating for so much Protein in so little calories. Maybe I could get some tips. Can you please post your day?

One day certainly will not hurt. And depending on your level of physical activity your necessary Protein intake will be higher. So you can shoot for 80 a day but I would not stress on going over every now and again.

Of course talk to your physician and/or nutritionist for a more "official" position.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
