Why did y'all remove it?

Recommended Posts

This may be a really silly question, but why did you opt to remove the band? Is that what one is supposed to do after reaching goal or did you have issues with it? I am still in the researching phase and want to make sure I understand the pitfalls as well as the benefits. Thanks

Hi Kara, the majority of the folks who've had their band removed had serious complications. This wasn't anything that they wanted to do, but it was medically necessary.

Peacheekeen auuuu you might want to read the thread first before asking a question like that. It seems you might have a little bit more researching to do. Thanks:)

Kara, some of us had our bands removed after it eroded and others after other kinds of complications. Dr. Pleatman posts around this board from time to time and once said something to the effect of "Why keep a band if it's not doing it's job?" I never liked the feeling of the foreign object in my body, so it was a relief when they removed it once it eroded.

I'm not doing so well, either. I've been overeating again, which is causing tremendous discomfort and pain. Now I'm wondering if I re-injured the hiatal hernia that I had prior to the band.

My band slipped, Kara, and was not able to be replaced because of adhesions. I may be rebanded later on down the road because I don't regret having the band and I miss it every day.

I had my band removed due to erosion as well. I was thankful to have it removed but now wish I could have kept it. I can be rebanded in about two or three months since that is my 6 month wait period after being disbanded.

I am also struggling with weight loss and it is an ongoing issue for me.

I had scar tissue issues that rendered the band useless because we couldn't get any fill in or out. I opted for the Duodenal Switch since there was a high possibility scar tissue would choke the port off again eventually, and I had gained back a bunch of weight due to SFS (Soft food syndrome) and eating like a cow during my pregnancy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
