Does protein bother anyones GI tract?

Recommended Posts

I am fine eating real whole food with Protein but higher count shakes and adding it to anything seem I cause major problems that have me running for the bathroom. I seem to be able to do about 12g per meal (of powder or drink) before I have a problem. I am still in liquids and doc had me on immodium to stop the dehydration but I am finding its only a problem when its not from food directly.

Could it be something else in the shakes or powder that is aggravating you? Lactose perhaps? or gluten?

It could be the lactose since it's whey Protein I suppose, but I eat yogurt, cottege cheese etc... with no problems. I was thinking it could be the sucralose in some of the shakes, I don't really eat a lot fake sugars, but the whey Protein Powder has none. I just have to get through the next week and I can eat mushies for my protein!

Sucralose will go straight through you! lol Learned this the hard way, many years ago when my family did Atkins - we snacked on Russell Stover chocolate turtles (sugar free) for Valentine's day that year and we were all sick the next day. (Did you know one of those fake sugars is actually used in veterinary medicine as a laxative!)

I am also somewhat lactose intolerant as well. cheese and such doesn't bother me - but milk can make me very sick, especially if it's the first thing I have in the morning.

I'd try experimenting with different shakes (some lactose free, some without the fake sugars or with less of them) and see if you can tell a difference.

Yep... I just live with it. I have bathroom issues ever since getting my gallbladder out so I just summed it up to be more of the same. I certainly hope I am absorbing some of the Protein I take in before I rub to the bathroom tho....

The only issues I have are with rice and apple skins.

My main sources of Protein are turkey, chicken, pork and beef... don't really like fish.

Never use Protein drinks (only the week after surgery).

My physician suggested only using whey Protein isolate products if lactose intolerant. I tried Unjury and haven't had any problems.

You can also use almond milk with your Protein powder, the unsweetened is only 30 calories a cup and has lots of calcium/

Diarrhea is common after gallbladder removal (basically you are now getting digestive juices constantly dripping into your small intestine, which in a lot of people causes things to just pass right on through). Sometimes your body adapts, sometimes it doesn't. After I had mine out this past December I was terrified I'd be in that boat - but if anything I've had firmer poos!

Yes, me! Protein shakes give me terrible gas, so do bars.

Since cancer treatment, I now have problems with wheat, lactose and fructose and artificial sweeteners too. But seven years ago, before cancer, when I got banded I tried to follow what everyone on here advised (even though my own doc said to just follow a normal diet) and every time - rumble belly, eye watering gas.

So, they were off my menu. I eat enough Protein in regular foods - cheaper, more natural. Suits me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
