Where did you go for 6 month pre op diet?

Recommended Posts

I have to complete a 6 month supervised diet as part of my insurance requirement. Just wondering where most people go...clinics, private docs, etc.

thanks!

First CONGRATULATIONS on taking the first steps!!!

Talk to your surgeons office. They should be able to give you options for your nutritiomist's and psychologist. Make sure to ask for people who have been through a weight loss struggle. My psychologist was actually a fellow lapbander, she was amazing and helped me set expectations through her journey! My nutritionist though was a bit rough she didn't understand my lifestyle nor did she understand what I was going through. Ask questions everyone is there to help! This forum is also a wonderful tool! I didn't have this until recently I'm already 4 months post op and down almost 50 lbs!! Good Luck!!

My insurance also required a "six month supervised diet".

I went to my PCP.

My insurance, (Aetna EPO & I live in Illinois. ) was a stickler for dates. Couldn't go too early, too late, etc, etc.

If I were you, I'd talk with a prospective surgeon's office, and/or your insurance and make sure you know your insurance's requirements and then follow the requirements to the letter. I've heard more than a few posters on here talking about having to start over because they didn't meet the exact dates.

Congrats on your decision and good luck!

I was able to get this from my surgeon's office because I didn't want to go to my own PCP. My son, also, completed his 6 month pre-diet with the same surgeon's office. Just make sure that your appointments are at least 30 days apart!!!!!! Not being the month apart can/will affect your insurance coverage. Best wishes, and welcome to you future! Karen

I went to my pcp for my 6 month supervised diet. For me, as long as I was seen some time in the month for 6 consecutive months I was good...it didn't need to be 30 days apart, so I would make sure you know exactly what your requirements are. Good Luck and Best Wishes! :)

I went through a lap-band center and they took care of almost everything. My insurance had a 4 month waiting period (Aetna POS) and you had to keep your appointments within a certain time frame or else you had to start over. I actually gained weight during the 4 months but lost more than what was required by my surgeon and insurance during the 2 week pre-op diet.

My insurance co, Tufts, requires me to go to a 6 month program they endorse: I Can Change.

My pcp turned in paperwork yesterday. Has any one else been through I Can Change program?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
