My pre-op diet is actually 10 day liquid diet. My surgeon does it this way for a few reasons, but one of them is to make sure that we can maintain a liquid diet given that is what is required after surgery. I haven't started it yet, but need to on 2/23. I think in the next week or so, I am going to start doing at least Breakfast as a liquid diet, so I can ease myself into it.

My liquid diet was tough. I will tell you I enjoyed every last minute of food before that diet started. I know I'm terrible, I had just heard I wouldn't be able to eat a lot of my favorite foods for a while. When I did start my liquid diet it was hard!! For me specifically because I lost being able to chew on something ( I know that sound silly but it proves how psychologically involved this journey is).

But anyways back to the diet. Mine was to be a high Protein liquid diet. I bought Adkins shakes and drank those twice a day. Also chicken & beef broth, sugar free puddings & Lots & lots of sugar free Jello (cool whip has 1 carb pertablespoon ;) ) After day three I cheated on the liquid part. I ate lite protein (chicken & turkey) lunch meats (I know not the best food) and cheese chunks.

The goal was to get me prepared for after but mainly to shrink the size of my liver so the surgery would be less invasive. Honestly after surgery I didn't want to eat anything with taste it took almost a week for that desire to come back. Make sure you keep drinking fluids the more hydrated you are through this whole process the easier it will be!! Good Luck & Congrats!!

I am not required to do a pre-op diet except the day before surgery.

HOWEVER, I have been doing 2 Protein shakes and 1 small meal to help prepare for the after math of surgery. Store bough broth's are really not all that great to me. So I have made turkey and chicken broth myself and I have the ability to feel like the flavor is satisfying.

On Monday, I will cut out the small meal and just do the liquid part. So far, after doing this for 4 days, I am already down 5 pounds. I helps me keep motivation when I check the scale .

Best of luck to you whatever road you choose to take.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
