can you drink after being banded? I'm not much of a drinker, but I like to have a margarita once in a while, you know during girls night out :)

My dr recommends waiting 3 months before drinking alcohol and then nothing carbonated.

My doctor said never. But each doctor has their own ideas about everything. Check with the doctor for the best answer.

Why never?

We are supposed to be able to live a diet-free life which includes everything (except carbonation)

Responsibly and in moderation.

I waited 2 months post op, the only thing I noticed was I get drunk easier so I can only have 1/2 drinks and my band feels tighter the morning after.

Try skinny girl margarita ;)

I occasionally drink a margarita, 3 yrs after. I've had my fair share of glasses of wine also (the first 1 after surgery - maybe 2-3 mths - I was tipsy on about 5 sips!). Even partaken in the carbonated beer.

I'm really watching it right now, however - on the Atkins plan. NO ALCOHOL is allowed (lowers your food eating inhibitions). I promised myself NO MORE DIETS after getting banded, but after a 20 lbs gain, I ahd to do something!

Everything in moderation...

Marci

Alcohol is empty calories so a lot of doctors do not want you consuming empty calories. I enjoy wine & drink a glass every night before dinner (have since day one). I counted the calories into my 1200 calories. Now that I am at goal I enjoy a martini once a week, too. Carbonation is off limits (beer & champagne) unless you let it go flat first.

Ask your doctor what he recommends.

I get so scared when I hear people gaining weight w/this band. I'm day 3 post op and am in pain saying what have I done to myself to get/stay skinny! Then I read this! Argh!

Skinny Wine Pinot Grigio is good, started to drink that a few months ago! I'm dying for a glass of wine!

Because people are basically irresponsible....give them an inch and they'll screw it up.....abuse it.....and screwing up your band by carbonation abuse can have dangerous results....

Speaking with my DR., he said I would be surprised how many people who have undergone this surgical procedure, just don't understand what is actually happening...

It's much easier to tell everyone No....and not worry about who knows what....it's the same for a lot of rules we are taught to do.....

( he knows I drink beer, but he asked me a lot of questions first then finally nodded his head and said Ok....)

Margarita, bourbon or wine several times a week. Log the calories and never more than one.

I drink red wine, a glass a night during the week... 5 ounces. I also drink bourbon/Manhattans on the weekends. I just have to keep it to a limit because 1) excess calories and 2) as mentioned ... if I catch more than a little buzz I'll eat everything. I never really had a food addiction before so I'm not worried about a transference. I drink as much or even less than before the band. I love the taste of beer but have never been into it as it fills up so much... even pre band. So a teeny schooner of a fine wit on occasion is about it.

Was never a huge soda drinker, so I don't miss carbonation... although I do treat myself to the occasional diet ginger ale.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
