Too many fills too soon?

Recommended Posts

My doctor told me to come in every week for a fill till I feel restriction. I have 11cc in a 14 band. I have gone 6 weeks in a row. I am beginning to question if this is right to do especially since he tells me I can go back to my regular diet in 2 hours. After reading the posts here I feel I'm doing damage to myself. I still don't have restriction. Does anyone else go so frequently? Is there a test I can request to make sure my band is ok?

My doc does fills every 4-6 weeks depending on many factors. It takes me at least 2 weeks to settle down after a fill so getting a fill every week would be insane for me. I am not you nor am I a doctor. But that rate of fills sounds pretty aggressive to me.

I know it sounds aggressive and that doesn't bother me . I guess i wonder if it is the wrong approach? I'm supposed to go in Friday again

Each dr has their own ideas so I wouldn't be concerned as I am sure he will do what is best. You arent his first patient hopefully. ;)

My dr was the polar opposite.. I didn't get my first fill for 2 months because I was losing on my own. Then it was 3 more over about. 3 mths until I hit the green zone.

My dr also advocates liquids for 24 hrs but again it's his preference. If it makes you less anxious doing that wouldn't hurt you.

I know you want to trust your doctor but I would have to question his motives. This thing is in us for life and when you get all filled up then what do you have to work with. If you are losing weight then I would tell him you dont want a fill. Restriction is not about the amount of food you are able to eat because I could eat a side of beef if I wanted to but its about being satisfied for four to five hours on a small amount of food. The band controls hunger. That is the whole point of the fills putting pressure on the nerve to signal your brain that you are full. I dont care how tight my band is I could eat as much as I wanted if I wanted too.

You'll find every doctor has their own idea what works best.

If you're not comfortable going in weekly then don't. You don't have to get a fill every week if you don't want to. If you'd feel more comfortable going in every 2-4 weeks then do it.

Also, just because you are ok'd to eat 2 hours after a fill doesn't mean you have to. If you'd feel more comfortable on liquids for a day, then again, do it.

Remember, it's your band and your body. You have to do what's best for you.

How much are you getting each time you get filled? Did you have some put in during sx? I got filled abt every six weeks 1 or 2cc at a time. It was my choice to ask for the fill and my doc was ok with that. Are you losing weight? There are no right or wrong ways. Each Dr does things different. I knew when I was ready and you know your body so listen to what it tells you.

Thank you all for responding. I have only lost 15 lbs from oct . No fills until 6 weeks after surgery . He usually puts in 1cc at a time. I am not satisfied for 4 or 6 hours or with one cup of food. I just want to be successful because my daughter just got banded. Can fills irritate your band?

. Can fills irritate your band?

yes.. but just temporarily per my dr..... Thus the liquids for 24 hrs per my dr.

Fills don't irritate the band or harm the band itself but can cause some temporary swelling that's why the liquid diet for 24 hrs. Your only getting one cc at a time and your hungry with one cup of food and your weight loss is slower I wld go with your drs advice. Everyones weight loss is different. It's nice that you have your daughter to talk with and help you with your journey. It's a slow process but well worth the wait.!

As far as your question about test to determine if all is well..

Does your Doctor do fills using a flouroscope? (Its similar to a live X-ray.) It can show band placement and restriction level. It can also show if your band possibly came undone..I know firsthand on that issue.

If they offer it, please try one. If not, ask if you can have a fill done using this method. I highly recommend it. My insurance, Aetna covers it.

Im sure there are other tests, but I have no experience with them.

I am going to ask about Fluor. I am so glad I did this ahead of my daughter and found this sight to get answers.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
