Port Incision Pain - how long?

Recommended Posts

Hello -

I was banded on 4/3/06 and am still having alot of pain at the port site. It feels like a 2nd degree burn. I saw my Dr today and he gave me some antibiotics.

Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do for the pain? How long does this pain at the port site last?

I had my surgery on 4/7/06 and I'm still having discomfort in my port area. It's not horrible but it's still there. It feels like surface pain - in other words if I run my fingers between my port incision site and my bellybutton it hurts. The area is not swollen or red or hot or cold or oozing or anything that looks other than completely fine! It's healing very well and the scar is starting to fade. I'm not really sure what the story is. Sorry I'm not much help, other than to say "I feel your pain" and "I'm having it too".

Why did your doctor give you antibiotics? Does he think you've got an infection? How does the site look? Can you SEE anything amiss? I worry about port infection more than just about anything else. I'm scheduled for my first fill on the 24th and I'm terrified I'll get infected from it.

It took me about a month for my port and surrounding area to feel normal again. I felt like I had half a brick in there, felt it when I bent - lay on my stomach - rough house, always sore and present. After the first month the feelings started fading and now (4 months post-op), I am seldon aware it is there.

My Dr gave me antibiotics cause he believes it is a bit infected. The incision is swollen, red and has some puss coming out of it. I can deal with all of that BUT it is soooo painful. I didn't get any sleep last night...I couldn't move or barely breath without if feeling worse and like I was on fire.

I just posted a thread about pain. I'm 6 days out and feel horrible. Around my port it hurts ALOT and it also feels like something is sticking in my ribs when I take a deep breath. I can't sleep either. I hope and pray nothing is wrong because my Doctor is in Mexico and I can't afford to go back right now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
