Would i know if I slipped?

Recommended Posts

Banded 1/31. Woke up at 3am STARVING and nauseous and tried to have oatmeal (I do better with the Roxiset web I have food in me) but after 3-4 vet small bites I started to gag. (My doc has instructed oatmeal and mashed potatoes to counter act my diarreah). About three or four times I had what I can only describe as a painful cramp/gag/hiccup. A small amount of slime (1/2tsp) came up and I managed to get ahold of my self. No was able to get 2-3 more sips of skim milk in and then took the med and went back to sleep. I have a call into my doc of course waiting to hear back, but would I know if something was wrong?

Chances are good you'd have some definite symptoms, but it is possible to have a slip without knowing it.

You're so soon after surgery. I highly doubt it's a slip. If I had to guess, I'd say your stomach is still healing and the oatmeal was just too much for it.

It's a good thing you called your doctor. Let us know what he says.

I doubt your band has slipped. It is very early in the healing process for you. If you're eating oatmeal, and mashed potatoes, they should be very, very runny! Also, remember very small bites!

As far as being very hungry in the beginning, before you've had enough fills to reach restriction, is so normal that we have given it a name: Bandster Hell. Do a search on this site and you will see that you're in good company!

I agree with everyone that it's probably too early to be a slip. You are still healing & need to take very, very small bites AND eat very slowly. You're going to have to get used to this new way of eating & it takes some time. Trust me, I've been there.

My surgeon told me if there was a slip you suddenly can't keep anything down- even Water. Are fluids staying down? I hope so. Feel better soon!

I was on liquids for 2 weeks post op and then a week of runny mushies... so I am guessing the oatmeal and or potatoes may have just been too much to fast... Also If I eat right after sleeping I have all sorts of problems. You are healing now... I cannot imagine the band slipped but hopefully your dr will give you an answer soon.

He said I am fine, it was likely that the band was restricting me a little more because I had been sleeping and to try liquids if I get that hungry at night (I find I have to eat every 4-5hrs or the hunger is insane) but if I can keep doing runny oatmeal and runny potatoes to keep doing it w/ Protein Shakes and yogurt b/c I am having a hard time staying hydrated.

Went to dr today. Band slip. Swallow study showed nothing going through until more than a minute went by and then very slow. Let me repeat what was said earlier. Nothing stays down. No food, no liquid nothing. Repositioning surgery scheduled for later this month. Band emptied. Feel good. Lost 9 lbs in 3 days. Dehydration but can drink and keep it down now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
