What is this strange feeling?????

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to get a sense of what this is I am feeling. Now that I have 7.5CC in my band I am starting slightly to fell the difference from one fill to the next. I am praying that the right amount of restriction happens and I start really loosing weight. However I have noticed that after I eat somethings it almost feels as though food is sitting right in the back of my throat. I can eat pretty much anything and it seems to go down but it's a strange feeling. I am not in any pain its more uncomfortable then anything. Almost like there is something sitting on my throat. Sorry its hard to explain but just wondering if anyone else has felt this odd feeling or is this what restriction feel like.

I get a very mild version of that occationally. Not really unpleasant just there. Clearly not stuck though.

I had some really dry roast beef a week or so ago and had that feeling, so I figured it was stuck. I went to liquids and mushies for 24 hours until it felt better. There really is such a learning curve with this thing!

You're not going to like this, but for your own good, I'm not going to sugar coat it:

Your food could be backing up in your esophagus because your stoma is blocked OR your band could be too tight. The band is not intended to STOP you from eating. You should be eating what you were told to eat(lean dense Protein first, veggies second), in the quantity you were told (1/2 to 1 cup), in the way you were told to eat(chew m&m sized bites 15-25 times, wait between bites, take 20-30 min to eat, no drinking with meals or for 1/2 hour after). This is pretty standard direction and I know I'm making an assumption, but with food backing up into your esophagus, you could be causing esophogeal dilation and setting yourself up for some serious issues and the loss of your band. You need a fill if and only if you follow the food protocol given by your doc/nutritionist AND you are hungry less than 4 hours after eating. If food is backing up because your stoma is blocked, your bites are too big, and/or you're not chewing enough and/or you're eating too fast. I would NOT consider getting a fill until you get this issue cleared up. You might actually need an unfill. Call your doctor and tell them food is backing up....this isn't a good thing.

Best of luck to you.

What you are feeling is one of the signals you need to watch for. This is the signal you've eaten too quickly, too much or too big. Slow down and let the band work it's magic.

Learning to eat the right way with the band is one of the hardest for obese people to conquer. Years of gorging, eating fast and not chewing can take another lifetime to unlearn. Take small bites, put your fork down and chew chew chew. Swallow, then pick up your fork again to start the process all over again.

BTW-This feeling is also a signal to stop, put your fork down, package up the remainder or your food and wait till your next meal to eat again.

Seriously, go see the doctor. This could be a back up or it could be reflux either can cause your band serious harm. It never hurts to consult the doc, better safe than sorry.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your honestly. I just called my surgeon. He is in surgery but is going to call me back today. I don't know what this feeling is, but Maybe I do need a slight infill. I am technically newly banded only a couple of months so I know I need to work on my bite size and remember to chew. Its all a work in progress.

Truth be told, I definatly got a little scared by the comments above appreciate more than ever the truth.

If I need a I won't waste anytime in getting one. plus I think I will keep myself on liquids until i feel whatever this is pass. I do not want to throw up as i know how bad that could be for the band. But this feeling is very strange and I hope it goes away soon.

2muchfun is correct....be careful...also you say you can eat "Anything"

Well, speaking for myself, i CANNOT eat anything I want......well I could, but some foods are more risky than others so I stay away from them....

Try eating softer foods....

And again, Yes, the band does inhibit me from overeating...it sets my portions, and to a extent the type of foods......when it says stop, I stop....and not push it...

But what you are feeling is normal for me, I can feel EVERY SWALLOW....but it also is a sign you need to modify you eating...after all, this is a lifestyle change, and to be successful we need to make the changes to adapt to the band....not the other way around, in my OPINION....

I just spoke to my surgeon and I explain to him what I was feeling. He told me not to worry and as long as I could eat, drink and things were going through the band that it probably wasn't the band. He said its definatly the band telling you its there and its working, so remember to chew and slow down.

I go back in to see him on Monday but if it gets worse or doesn't go away in the next couple of days to call him again.

Hopefully whatever this is, goes away. Im going to try liquids for the remainder of the day and see if that helps.

I will check in tomorrow to let you guys now how I am doing.

My mom does not have the band but she has a spastic esophagus and gets that from time to time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
