Post Op food restrictions

Recommended Posts

I know that 1/2 cup portions are the standard and carbonated beverages are forbidden. I am curious about other "forbidden" foods and beverages. I am trying to educate early as my journey has just begun.

Actually, 1/2 cup isn't standard. I know, confusing huh? Some surgeons say 1/2 cup but some say up to 1 cup. It all depends on what yours says. Mine happens to say a cup of food or less.

As far as forbidden foods, there are none. Carbonation is the only "forbidden" thing, anything else you can have in moderation. I personally don't deprive myself but I am careful to log the calories of absolutely everything I eat to make sure I'm not going over my daily allowance.

Best wishes!

My dr also recommends 1 cup of food three times daily once I get to solids. No carbonated beverages at all. I can have caffeine and alcohol 3 months post-op.

Same here. 1 cup of food 3 times a day. Besides Protein Shakes and small Snacks. Carbonated beverages and beer are off limits. With the beer, some bandsters have no issues, some do. The carbonated beverages, if they are allowed to go flat, can be find. My psychologist who is a veteran banster of 7 years drinks flat diet Dr. Pepper. There are foods that we are told can cause us issues. Fruits/veggies with seeds or a skin. bread. Ect. Again, what bothers some, doesn't bother others.

My surgeon forbids: carbonated beverages, popcorn, and chewing gum. I've not had any of these in 3 years.

Things my BAND has forbidden thru trial and error, LOL: corn, bread, sauerkraut, lettuce. But damned if I don't have a bite of sauerkraut every New Years Day and yep, I rent it because it comes right back up.

My surgeon only completely forbids carbonation but frowns upon bread or too much rice or Pasta because of it getting stuck so I just completely avoid it all and personally I don't really miss it and I'm doing fine.

Chewing Gum? I've not heard anything about that...what's the word on chewing gum and bands?

Chris - My doc also forbids chewing gum for two reasons: 1) chewing gum causes people to gulp or take in extra air which causes bloating which can stretch the pouch and 2) you can swallow it and it can get stuck. Not sure if those are LuuLuu's doc's reasons, but that's what I was told. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
