Everything Happens for a Reason

Recommended Posts

In 2010 I wanted to have Lasik eye surgery before my wedding. I went for the consult and it was detected that I may have had swollen optic nerves. After a scary few months it was found that I have a rare condition where deposits develop on my optic disc. By finding this out early I was able to seek treatment before anything happened to my vision.

Now in 2013 as I am pursuing Lapband surgery it was found that I have sleep apnea. I go tonight for a CPAP test. Though this was a major blow to my self-esteem with thoughts such as "How will I ever feel sexy for my husband" crossed my mind I also had to think about how low my oxygen levels drop and how many times an hour I stopped breathing. I can also take comfort in knowing the sleep apnea can go away after I have this surgery and I am successful in my weight loss journey.

I am concluding month 1 of my 3 month supervised weight loss insurance requirement next week. I also have my psych eval Friday. Time is flying and I'm learning so much thanks to my amazing surgical team/program and this forum. Thanks everyone for your inspiration!

Wendy

I love your positive attitude! It will take you far!

Don't feel bad about the CPAP and the sleep apnea. Granted there's no guarantees, but a lot of us no longer have a sleep apnea after loosing weight. I had one too before I got the band a year ago. Now, not only do I no longer have sleep apnea, I don't even snore anymore. At all!

Best wishes!

Two things from a Male perspective:

1. Don't wear it during sex.

2. You drastically under estimate the power of the Male sex drive

I wear a cpap nightly and my wife is very happy about it. I used to stop breathing in the middle of the night and it would scare the hell out of her and she would wake me up. Some nights I would suddenly stop snoring and she had to check to make sure my chest was going up and down.

Just remember the cpap is for sleeping, not relations although I did ask my wife once if she wanted to have a 'go round with the elephant man'...probably a little TMI there...LOL

sleep apnea can kill you and it is no joke. Look on the bright side...you are married. Think how much it would suck if you were single.

You know, Jim raises an excellent point. I bet your husband will appreciate the CPAP machine.

Years ago (MANY years ago) I dated a man who had untreated sleep apnea. Honestly, sleeping with him scared the crap out of me. I remember he'd inhale then...nothing. I swear a full minute or two would go by with him doing this weird little gasping thing before he'd finally sputter and exhale. More than once I shoved him in the arm just to make him breath again. It always really scared me.

It's great that many if us are required to have a sleep study pre-op. I didn't think I had apnea, but the test was required and I was having 12-15 apnea episodes an hour. My step-dad died from sleep apnea, so I understood the implications to my health. The cpap machine retrained me to sleep. My husband and I made a joke about it...he was mission control and when it was lights out, I'd tell him "ready for liftoff!". I only needed to use it for 2 months pre and 3 months post op. it made a huge difference and once I lost 40 lb I was off it.

Being married 46 years next week, I have to tell you, if you're sleeping during sex, you're missing out!

Love your positivity!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
