One year bandiversary

Recommended Posts

Well, one year ago I was really looking forward to this day because with only(?) 72 pounds to lose I thought I'd be at goal by now.

Instead today is the one year bandiversary of my FIRST band surgery. I am down 46 pounds. I weigh exactly what I weighed on the date of my SECOND band surgery with plication in November.

I only have 4 cc's in my band right now and don't feel any restriction at all whatsoever, and I get hungry often because I can't eat very much at one time, so I'm just glad that I'm not gaining. To be perfectly honest, if it wasn't for being able to feel my port, I'd feel like I hadn't ever had any surgery! I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever see the green zone again. I was there twice after the first surgery and it felt wonderful -- eat a little and didn't even think about food for a good four hours or longer!

Anyway, earlier this week a friend that knows every detail of my surgery journey asked me if it was worth it and would I think it was worth it even if I never lost another pound. I didn't even have to stop and think about it. YES, it was and has been worth it. I'm down 46 pounds, off blood pressure meds, don't feel all self-conscious about being the fattest person in the room! I've moved to a new state where I know absolutely no one, and I love the fact that when I meet people here they never knew that fat me!

I have a new doctor that I hope I like as much as my original band doctor! I hope we'll get me back to restriction and by the time I have my second surgery one year bandiversary I will actually be at goal weight!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
