fashionstylist 458 Posted January 30, 2013 Hey everybody! I just recently had my insurance kick in. They said I would have to have a psych eval. What does it entail? WHat type of questions or conversations will you have? What does the report have to say to get you approved? I need to know abt the whole process please. dimpsedee 10 Posted January 30, 2013 I had to fill out a questionaire and then had a sit down with the shrink. I was very nervous knowing that this conversation could make or break my surgery but it was very relaxed. She asked if I had done any reseach, knew anyone who had had the surgery, if I had a support system at home, what my diet history was like. It went by pretty fast- she suggested that a few books for me to cheak out and for me to start on the treadmill for 10 minute intervals to get used to getting off my butt. Just relax and be honest. You'll do fine. Good luck
Cindy2013 99 Posted January 30, 2013 Don't let the psych eval freak you out. I think they want to make sure you are committed enough to make it successful. I met with the psychologist for about an hour and we discussed why I want the lapband, what I have tried in the past, etc. He asked if I have any unresolved emotional issues from my past (in an indirect way), and was looking to see if I am depressed. I was given some pointers and words of encouragement. I had to come back a 2nd day to fill out a bunch of questionnaires. One was a personality assessment. I don't recall the other ones. But it wasn't hard. Like Dee said, just relax and be honest. The doctor is on your side and wants what is best for you.
catfish87 3,471 Posted January 30, 2013 I think most everyone has to go through this. I have NEVER heard of anyone not getting approved based strictly off of a Pshyc eval. Don't let it stress you. Mine was just some basic questions, like why do you eat too much, what triggers you to want to snack, do you think you can change these to trigger a more positive habit, etc, etc. It lasted about 30 minutes, and she confirmed I was crazy. LOL Good luck!
Brandy Hunter-Lee 1 Posted January 30, 2013 No worries on this. I am a crisis counselor with a master degree in counseling psychology. As it turned out, the psychiatrist my surgeon sent me to was someone I had worked with for years! Their job is to make sure you are ready for the major changes your going to go through, and your expectations are realistic. They are not there to turn you down.
