Im only two days post op (almost three) and i just dont feel like eating. Im not really hungry at all. I ate a few sips of Tomato Soup and a popsicle tonight. But its like i gotta force myself. Is this normal? Ive also been trying to make an effort to sip Water but im just not feeling it.

I know i could not eat all day and feel fine..

You have to drink. Dehydration will kick you in a bad way. As far as eating, I was on a clear liquid diet for 7 days preop and 1 week postop, so lack of calories wont kill you for a while. Hang in there and sip, sip, sip that Water if thats all you feel like you can do for now. Hunger will return...I promise.

Absolutely make sure you get your Water. I was also on Clear Liquids for a week after. It is normal to not want to eat right now. I was not allowed to go home until I could prove to them I would drink. Just sip as much as possible the clear liquid. I drank the Ensure Clear Peach flavored drink to make sure I was getting some Vitamins and Protein. If the flavor is too sweet you can always cut it with water. Dehydration is a bad bad thing. You will start getting hungry just a little bit in the second week.

At first I confused being hungry with pain. I found that the more I sipped sometimes the less I hurt.

Yes, while you're swollen you just don't feel like eating, your appetite will come back.

You do really need to stay on top of your fluids. Shoot for 1oz every 15mins. That too will change after awhile. I found sipping warm drinks helped too.

Good luck!

sip, sip, sip

I'm 6 days out and on clear liquids too. My doc says my stomach is swollen from the surgery so i wont feel hungry for a week or so. he said to only ingest cold or room temp liquids for the first week. I've been living on Water, Gatorade, sf Popsicles and ice chips....and my extra fat stores...

I was on a clear liquid diet 2 weeks pre-op and a week post op. Today was the first day I consumed 1/2 cup of chicken broth. I had a few sips in the hospital. I haven't felt like eating anything, not that I can really eat anything. Other than that I have been sipping on gatorade, Water, SF popsicles and SF Jello. I am sure by friday I will be ready for some blended Soups, fruit juices and some milk. By week 3 I can add oatmeal and pudding in there. Like someone said up above, worry about saying hydrated....sip, sip, sip. Everyday it seems that I can "sip" more.

Totally normal. I managed to take in about 200 calories A DAY for the first few days post op.

As the others have said totally normal but you must get as much liquid into you as you can to stay hydrated, I remember my first week I was only having about two cups of broth a day but I did sip on Water all day, took a few weeks to get a full @8 glasses of water a day in.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
