Ok maybe im thick!

Recommended Posts

I'm confused...people say you should eat about 1 cup of food per meal, but if its solid food like steak or something how can it be measured in cup form. Maybe it's a stupid question but I really want to stick to the correct portion size. I'm calorie counting in my fitness pal but I still don't want to stretch my pouch by eating 9kg of zucchini (slight exaggeration). Anyone?

My doc said about 3 ounces of Protein like chicken or fish. About the size of a deck of cards. Yes, one cup of chicken would kill me right now. I measure out my meat on a food scale and then I'll have about 1/2 cup of a veggie with it. That holds me for 4-5 hours.

As state by the poster above me, a deck of cards is a great way to eyeball portion size for things that can't be measured in a cup. Or, 3oz-4oz of meat. When I have chicken for dinner, I'll weigh the chicken on a food scale but then I know I only have about a 1/2 cup of food left for veggies and starches.

A cup of steak is the same as a cup of ground beef, lettuce, ice cream or popcorn.... But as others have said its best to use a scale for measuring meat. I usually eat 3 oz of protien at every meal.

It's one total cup of food if it were all compacted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
