LAPBAND and TAXES ready to file soon

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am getting as much information as I can about deducting the lapband surgery So far, I understand that you can deduct all medical expenses that are in excess of 7.5% of your gross income. What about other expenses related to the surgery at the time, like the hernia repair that costs over 6800.00 however insurance paid that, i didnt, but is it still a deduction. I also had a stress test that cost over 6000.00 out of pocket cost 4800.00.

So is any of this medical related expense deductible or just the Band surgery? Also, is it really worth it and is there often a refund in the end? I only worked PT this year, so my income wasnt anything major.

thanks a bunch...any answers are appreciative

I'm interested in this too, I don't know if this will do any good, but I'm taking mileage numbers to and from the doctor for all visits to add to the total for taxes. I hope it helps because it would be nice to get some of this loan paid down.

Yep, what Mis73 said is correct. Add up all your out of pocket medical expenses and if they total over 7.5 of your adjusted gross income, it is deductible... that's my understanding at least.

Any medical expense paid out of pocket co-pays, bills, medications, Vitamins, any thing that is a medical expense no matter if it was related to this surgery or not if it was a medical expense and you have the receipt or bill you can use it. My husband had an experimental eye surgery that cost 50,000 and insurance didn't pay one penny and we used every medical expense we both had that year and it added up to a great deal.

Absolutely worth it.we got a big deduction last yr for medical expenses.

I just filed tonight(turbo tax) and I didn't spend enough this year to get the deduction. But take the time to check it out. And keep all slips regarding any special food you eat for the band too (ex. Shakes)

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
