Ideas for "mushies" phase

Recommended Posts

I am just about to finish my liquid phase of post-surgery, and move on to "mushies". As much as I am looking forward to tasting food again, the idea of eating pureed chicken is not really exciting me! Looking for any ideas or tips that has helped others be successful during this phase. Thanks!

I didn't have to do purees for the mushy phase - as long as the meat was soft and moist and I chewed it well, it was allowed. In this phase, our surgeon also allows a bit of low-fat mayo to help the meat stay moist, if needed. Laughing Cow light cheese wedges were also great; I'd mash them with a bit of unflavored Protein Powder to give them a boost. Egg beaters, refried Beans, yogurt, cottage cheese.... I also added the unflavored Protein powder to whipped potatoes - because of band tightness in the morning, I needed something warm and don't always have time to make eggs, so the potatoes were nice because I could just nuke a couple tablespoons. The potatoes aren't great for my solid diet, but my surgeon is okay with them now (especially with the protein).

pureed spinach with nf ricotta cheese and Tomato sauce- heated in the microwave is like lasagne filling. So good!

Substitute spinach for canned pumpkin for a different spin on it ( needs nutmeg salt and pepper)

Believe it or not, chicken put in the blender with chicken broth really isn't bad at all. The broth gives it flavor.

You could also do chicken or tuna, mixed with a little low fat mayo, in the blender.

Refried Beans with a little melted cheese on top was VERY filling. (refried Beans are already mushy even!)

I really liked no sugar added applesauce at that stage, too.

Also...if you like it, hummus is good at this stage. It's one of my favorite things to eat and even without the pita bread, it's still delish. And you get Protein with it from the chickpeas..

Egg salad is good too. I use Miracle Whip Lite, it as the least fat and calories. Also, try making you own ham salad. Sweet potatoes are really food too. You can nuke the, mash them, or chop it up like hash browns. They are always soft! I also use spray butter. Don't forget creamy almond or peanut butter!

Experiment! If you like something, chop it up or throw it in the blender!

Brown some 93% fat free ground beef and mix with spaghetti sauce and ricotta cheese. I pureed the combination and enjoyed the mushy meat sauce :)

I would check with the doctors office to understand exactly what they want you to be eating at this point. My doctor called for first week of mushies to the yogurt, cottage cheese or ricotta. Second week I could have canned chicken or tuna. Remembered just because something can be put in a blender doesn't mean that it's not going to be heavy sitting in your pouch.

I never blended anything past liquids. You should be learning to eat now.

Sabra only has 5 grams of Protein in a serving. I sometimes eat as snack. I love it to but not for protein.

Wendy's chili gently rolled through the blender is yum. Also, any fave Soup. I used the chicken enchilada from Whole Foods or Chilis.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
