Continued gas/nausea after removal

Recommended Posts

My daughter had her band removed one week ago due to erosion. The band had eroded into her stomach and she was experiencing severe nausea and vomiting, which lasted a while until they figured out what was going on. They kep saying the band hadn't slipped and so everything was fine.

We expected life to be a lot better after removal, however one week post op she is still very gassy and nauseated. Eating very little, taking nausea meds and gas-x. She's miserable and don't know what to do to help her. Check up with doctor after surgery.... stiches healing nicely and no infection, and said some people are more sensitive to laparascopic surgery.

Anyone else had this problem? Any thing work for you? I wish we'd never heard of lap-band or had this surgery. The weight loss hasn't been worth the hell she's still going through.

What was involved in her removal? Is her stomach intact or did they have to do a partial gastrectomy? Did the dr prescribe anti nausea drugs or Prilosec? Is she tolerating liquids and keeping hydrated?

If she had a lot of damage from her band, her recovery will be more difficult, but I would be surprised if no medication for her symptoms was given...hope she feels better soon, but if not, call the dr again.

We were prescribed multiple nausea medications... they helped a little but not much. I think a lot of the nausea was coming from acid and gas. Over the counter remedies did not help, however when the doctor finally prescribed Nexium, things got a lot better.

How are things going now?

Things are much better, thanks for asking. Recovery after surgery was agonizingly slow, however the Nexium has made a lot of difference (although very expensive). She has been able to return to work last week, and is planning to try backing off of the medication to perhaps every other day and see how that goes.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
