Post Sugery, have a few questions

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I had surgery one week ago today. Everything went perfect and I am feeling pretty good. Still sore, but otherwise great. Now that I have this new thing in my body, I have a few questions.

So...I have no appetite. From what I have been told and read this is normal. What I don't understand is, what causes the lack of appetite? My understanding is that I have no restriction until I get my first fill. So if I am not restricted, why no appetite? And would restriction even slow down your appetite or does that just make you feel full faster? Now, I don't mind the lack of appetite at all. Its not a complaint, I just want to fully understand what is happening with my body. And before surgery I thought I had it all figured out. Then the band get placed and I am confused!

Thank you all for being such a great resource!!

Good question, I was banded on Monday and am wondering the same thing. Your right, now that we are on the otherside, I feel confused too to some degree.

Right now you are still swollen from the surgery and tbat causes the lack of appetite. As the swelling goes down your appetite will return and you might feel like you don't even have a band.

Restriction is a simular feeling. I can go about 4 hours without feeling physically hungry. Keep in mind there is a difference between physical hunger & head hunger. The band will not help with head hunger.

Hope this helps.

If you are still taking any pain meds, that too can kill an appetite.

Totally normal to have no appetite from all the swelling....around a week after surgery my swelling went away and that's when my hunger returned...Congrats on your surgery! :)

The appetite will return, and then you will be forced to use your will/want power to sustain you until you get a fill. Pretty normal now for post surgery. It should start to return before long. Just stick with the plan you were given on eating portions.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
