Hi all. Need a little advice from you all. I am 8 weeks post op and have not had a single drink of soda. (Which was a necessity for me before surgery). My husband and I both drink coffee though and find we are wasting a lot because he has been having regular coffee and me Decaf. We are thinking of going to 50/50 to not waste as much and to still allow him SOME caffeine. I know they say no caffeine postop, but would 50/50 coffee really hurt? I tend to have a cup or two each morning. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks so much!!

My Dr. has absolutely no problem with regular coffee (I was worried he would since he is LDS), his only concern was hidden calories in what people put into it. I drink it 7 days a week.

My surgeon's nutritionist (done in Mexico) gave me a plan that says coffee is OKAY two days after surgery. I'm also on omeprazol post-op for 30 days, which controls gastric acid secretion, and coffee is really acidic so I don't know why it's okay. I haven't had any yet, since I've already suffered through the headaches of caffeine withdrawal, I didn't want to start back up right away.

Also, I have a local nutritionist who says NO coffee for 4 - 6 weeks after surgery.

Find a good shop in your area that roasts their own Beans. There are many variety of coffees that are naturally low in acid. I use www.roasting.com, they have a pamphlet that rates the acidity level of their various beans.

I was told that the only reason they say afford caffine is that it can increase your appatite. So try it and if you find you are hungyer then go back to Decaf.< /p>

It's always best to follow your surgeon's instructions, and ask about what he can allow within reason.

Caffeine is a known stomach irritant, and as such we need to be aware of that. There are similar reasons as to why we are advised to not use any NASIDS once banded. I was told that this was the reason to avoid caffeine. I take Nexium daily, and have not had any ill effects from drinking my limited amount of coffee.

I continue to drink caffeinated coffee every day, but only allow myself one cup or glass of it. I flavor it with Stevia and add a splash of milk, so though there are some liquid calories involved, it's not to the degree it would be going to Starbucks.

Bottom line: Ask your surgeon what they advise...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
