Recommended Posts

So you know how after the diet you are suppose to be put on the liquid diet for the first 48 hours the the apple sauce Jello etc .. well is there any risk of skipping a couple steps and 4 days after the surgery you eat mashed potatoes shredded chicken? ? Honestly I have had it already and I feel good I am not throwing up or anything just feel full quick which I know is normal ..

Felix - The vets will chime in here. My theory is that they give us this post op diet and timeline for a reason...even though we feel ok, it takes a heckuva lot more work for your stomach to process the mushies than it does the liquid and you could potentially do some damage. At the very least I would discuss it with your doc and get clearance to move on before you just do it on your own. You may feel ok now, but after a couple of days of eating mushies your band and pouch may retaliate.

Yes, there's a huge risk. Your stomach has been sutured and needs time to heal. If you start going against your doctor's post op instructions, you risk ripping those stitches, stomach bleeding, and your band jeopardized entirely.

I'm not saying this to be mean, I'm saying this to be honest. You will have diet rules for the rest of your life to lose weight and keep it off. You will have rules to lose weight at all and live with your band. If you can't even follow some very simple post op rules long enough to give yourself time to heal you're just setting yourself up for long term failure.

Do not skip steps... The diet is to allow you to heal.

If you can't stick to this what will happen later? Suck it up and just do it!

I was progressed very fast by my physician post op, by the end of one full week I was allowed soft foods. The only thing I caution you about as being one of those VETS who has been successful, is that the band will never stop you. If you want something bad enough you will figure out a way to eat it and if at 4 days post op you do not follow your doctors instructions you risk not following them later. This process is hard, I won't lie and tell you it has been easy, I have cried, been depressed, and had to rewire and rethink every relationship I have ever had with food. My band and my success with my band happened because I followed my doctors rules, was I hungry sometimes, yes. Did you hurt your band, No, did you stretch your band, No. I wish you success with your band and your journey.

Stay focused and keep your goals in site!

Why are you spending the money for the surgery, then ignoring the sound instructions your surgeon provided for your post op healing?

Through the initial stages of your journey you will likely have to rely on willpower, to me the same as "want power", to be successful to loose weight. You will be able to eat just about anything you want, and in quantities which exceed medically recommended standards. Just because you can eat that way does not mean that you should. That mindset is what it will take for you to learn how to work with your band, and be successful with weight loss.

If you are already ignoring instructions given by your surgeon, it does not bode well minimizing the importance of these instructions. Not for your health and well being, or for your weight loss.

Another essential thing to remember is that your medical team will always be the best and most important source for answering your medical and diet compliance questions. You are paying for their expertise, utilize it.

Best wishes for your successful journey...

Yes, there is a risk in not following your post-op diet. That's a common cause of band slips. Here's a link to an article on why it's not a good idea to cheat on your post-op diet:

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
