Has anyone tried Shirataki Noodles?

Recommended Posts

So I've been researching the heck out of everything and came across a low-carb substitute for Pasta. Shirataki noodles...say what? lol thought the name sounded funny  Any who, I've been using 100% whole wheat pasta (in small amounts of course) but my husband was recently told he has high cholesterol. They gave him a couple of months to try to lower it by changing his diet before the put him on medication. I was banded on Nov. 2012 and decided to change my entire families eating habits along with my own...lol My husband only had like 15lbs to lose and my 17 yr old daughter has about 40lbs to lose. Either way they have been very supportive in my journey and willing to try whatever I put on the table. This makes my life soooo much easier. Now back to the subject. Has anyone tried these noodles and are they good? If so, how did you prepare them? I LOVE pasta and hope I can find something that is delicious and healthy for me and my family. :)

Yes! I used to buy them all of the time. I've tried pretty much everything! lol! I used them in place of spaghetti noodles. They don't taste as good as Pasta and they smell fishy, but for the zero calories, the substitution is worth it. I had to make sure to use Tomato paste with my sauce because the sauce doesn't tend to want to stick on them. After I boiled them, I drained them immediately in cold Water and then used my kitchen shears to cut them up into small pieces because they are a little hard to digest. They are definitely worth a try, though. :-)

I've never used them, but Hungry Girl uses them in a lot of her Pasta recipes. I think the website is www.hungrygirl.com

I've used them too. Don't care for them at all. I am of the variety that would rather not have it then eat something I don't like. :-)

I bought them thinking there was no flour in them, but alas, its yam flour or something. Haven't tried them, but they're sitting in the fridge! Thinking I will stick to no Pasta at all- don't want to trigger a craving I've managed to stay away from. Of course, depends on the person!

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I think I will be trying them soon. I will keep you posted. :)

CaWannaBand- thanks for the link. One of my friends suggested, since I love mushrooms as well, to try pouring the turkey spaghetti sauce over the mushrooms. Never thought of that but it was great. I sauteed the mushrooms with a little bit of EVOO and then poured the sauce over, added a little low fat mozzarella cheese and it was DELICIOUS!!

Have a great day!! God Bless!

There are different kinds there is a tofu and simple Shirataki. If you cannot find them at your local health food store or Asian market check out miraclenoodle.com. They are 1/2 the cost at your Asian market.

Tastes like cardboard, looks awful. I would rather no have Pasta. Use whole wheat in small amounts or spinach. Yes, they have flour, but at least they look like pasta!

I preferr a lowcarb diet so I use spagetti squash slice in half length wise bake until a fork goes EASILY in. Scrap it out with a fork. It "looks" like spagetti does not taste like it though. After sraping i put in a bowl season with evoo salt pepper an use spag sauce. Pretty good :)

Have to be honest. I LOVE them. I run them through Water first to get rid if the smell. Then in a frying pan with coking spray only I put in minced garlic, diced tomatoes and whatever vegetables I have with either shrimp or grilled chicken and then add the noodles. Absolutely delicious!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
