Weaning of caffeine

Recommended Posts

I'm anticipating having my surgery some time in early April. I'm a major caffeine addict and I know I should should start to wean off caffeine soon. Did anyone else need to wean off the coffee/energy drinks before surgery? How did you feel?

I am probably having surgery in April too. I first started drinking caffeine free sodas then cut out soda too about two weeks ago. it wasn't that bad. not as bad as I thought it would be. I also think, that I sleep better. I was drinking lots of caffeinated soda a day...

I was a major diet coke consumer... and no doubt addicted to the caffine. I had my last diet coke on the night before I started my pre op liquid. It was 4 days of headaches for me... but once day 5 rolled around I was fine and I find I do not miss it.. the caffine that is... I miss diet coke a whole lot!!!!

I did and I won't lie, it was awful. I slowly cut back on caffeine over a couple weeks but I still had nasty headaches for about a week after I stopped it completely.

However, I was weaning off soda, which is necessary because it's carbonated. coffee isn't carbonated so you can still have it after being banded. Energy drinks are ok if they're not carbonated but just be really careful of excess calories.

You can wean slowly since you have time by doing half caffiene and half Decaf. As time goes by use less caffiene and more decaf until you are not drinking anymore. That way you wont suffer from any headaches.

I never was a soda drinker and I used to only have one cup of coffee a day which I loved but ever since my banding I can't stand the taste of coffee..I've tried regular, Decaf, mixed all kinds of sugar free stuff and still don't like it.....but being British, I do still like my cup of tea!

since your surgery is in april u have time to do it slow my suggestion start with half caff then ween down to de caff also trying other types of beverages you might like to sub the coffee. I love coffee and used to drink soda no Water it took me close to a year to get away from soda. but i did it. you can to good luck.

Thanks everyone for their advise. I think I'm going to start mixing Decaf coffee with my reg coffee to get weaned off so I don't suffer from those nasty headaches!

Do we really have to be off caffeine? I saw it was recommended due to dehydration but I drink tons of Water. I'm going to miss carbonated drinks.< /p>

I thought the same thing. After being banded I didn't miss them at all. My taste buds have changed so much that I can't stand the taste anymore (when I try a sip of husbands!) it is amazing how things change. I went totally off caffeine at preop, but now a year out I DI drink Decaf tea and if I have to I have regular. Not often though because I don't want to have to put more Water in to compensate for it!

Ditto Sue - mutant taste buds here post op. I took a sip of what I thought was a flat Sobe drink and the carbonation and artificial sweet didn't taste good at all. I was a major soda drinker - caffeine and full sugar - I didn't mess with that diet stuff. I gave it up the day I started my pre op diet. When you are mentally ready for something these things are but a minor inconvenience and you won't even miss it.

When they started talking about no caffeine, I was good bc I stopped it a few years ago. When they said no more soda period, I almost passed out. Drink mostly Water but every once in a while, I want one. It will ultimately be worth it. Lol. Surgery. For me may happen in early April

I can't live without my coffee.......2-3 cups per day, at least....2 in the morning, and usually one more later in the day.....

24 hrs after surgery I began drinking coffee again...

I'm not sure what caffene has to do with the band....I do know, in many health circles drinking coffee is always a topic of discussion, so it does not surprise me it comes up here also....

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
