Are fat-free chicken broth (10 calories), sugar-free Jell-O (10 calories) and sugar-free Popsicles (15 calories) universally allowed on a pre-op diet? My doc has me on Protein shakes/drinks only, but I've seen other posters saying things like, "remember you can always have..." about these things, since they're all fat-free and negligible calories. Thoughts? I know I can call my doctor tomorrow and ask.

Thanks!

Becky

Actually, there isn't anything universal on any diet, pre or post op. I know, it sounds ridiculous, but it's true. Every surgeon has their own idea what works and too often I'd see surgeons that forbid or allow things that most others don't.

well, every dr is different

my dr gave me a list of what i could have only

Protein shakes, Water, tea, coffee, broth, SF popsicles

(no sugar and no caffeine)...took 4 days of detoxing and it wasnt

so bad..i was not to concern myself with cal counting as i was shrinking my liver.

dr said if it was not as it should be when he operated, he wouldnt and

that was the reason i did not cheat.

hang in there...its only for aliitle while although it seems like forever

when you are doing it

I am afraid I agree with Mis73... you will need to call and ask. Every doctor seems to have different ideas. It can be frustrating, but you best bet is do what the doc said!

If that is what your doctor told you to do then that is what you should be doing.

Always check with your dr. Mine allowed the required shakes, sodium free broth only if needed, 2 sugar free Popsicles and Decaf coffee and tea. And of course Water.< /p>

Thanks, everyone. I did call my doc today and he OK'd these things for my diet. The chicken broth is nice as it's the one non-sweet thing allowed! Wrapping up Day 7 here and down 16 pounds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
