1st month of 6 month supervised diet

I am one month into my 6 month physician supervised weight loss plan. I know that I didn't do all that I should have done this month. So for the next month, I decided to set small goals like eat fruit everyday, exercise for 20 minutes for 3 days, and drink more Water. This first month has made me question everything that I thought I knew about nutrition, about myself, about how in the world did I let myself get to this point. Did anyone else go through this? What are some of the things and emotions that you experienced during this phase? What can I do to make the time pass quicker. ;)

My second doctor's appointment is Thursday, I'll give you an update then.

I am in my 4th month of my 6 month diet. I have had 0 luck. I have lost and gained the SAME 4 POUNDS over and over its so frustrating I have given up sweets, I have begun to drink even more Water, (I don't drink sodas, so I gave up fruit juices and tea) I have increased my veggie intake and also my Protein and STILL no luck. I am at my whits end. I even bought a treadmill for my house and I use it twice a week for 45 minutes each time (No, I'm not speed walking, but doing the slower longer pace)

My killer vice is we eat out A LOT. So I have been trying to at least cook more, so I have more control of what goes in the foods.. but again.. SAME 4 POUNDS..

Sorry I am just so disappointed.

Have you started eating smaller bites and going without water/liquid 30 minutes before and after a meal? I'm having trouble with that one but the time is getting better... I'm up to 10 minutes now where before I had to have something while I was eating.

Hi,

I'm new here and also need 6 months of supervised dietician visits required by my insurance. I already had my first weigh in with the nurse practitioner and meet for the first time with my dietician this Wednesday. Looking forward to learning all I can in these months. However, I can't even imagine waiting that long, feeling very anxious about the 6 month wait. Anyway, I'm sure in the end we will look back and say "wow that flew by." Can't wait to start the rest of my life ...

I too had a 6 month challenge before hand. The best thing I can tell you, is start putting different little things in place before you go for surgery. Things like....

1: slowing down when you eat, and only with a fork... it looks a little weird to eat a burger with a fork, but it take you much longer and you get tired of the monotony of the food process. plus get the satisfied feeling.

2: Change you Snacks. Look up new Protein based Snacks. Protein scones are one of my fav and super easy to make and keep you full for a while.

Use this time as a chance for you to learn about what Vitamins you like, what protein types and brands you like, to not drink as much when you eat (go to smaller cup size). Give yourself a different challenge every month so that you don't take it all on at once.

We will all be here to support your journey and struggles. I feel you pain and restlessness in the time constraint, but YOU CAN do this and you will.

I think trying to stop drinking while you're eating before surgery is pointless. For me it really has not been an issue at all. The only time it seems to bother me is when I eat something that is really salty. And for me that's normally because I've also eaten something that is also very high in fat.

I'm guessing your biggest issue right now is about Portion Control. It's been shown in research that unless you measure out your food you will think that you're eating a lot less than you really are. Eating out probably is making weight loss harder for you. If you are going to eat out I would make sure that it is plain chicken breast no breading and lower fat sauces at the very least.

I don't like to cook and I still don't cook even now. I highly recommend buying a roasted chicken and eating that through the week. I had 7 months between my consult and surgery, and I lost 50 pounds. I also was exercising an hour a day 7 days a week. Highly recommend Water based exercise it's a specially good for those of us who are larger with joint issues.

@TXFLEA, hang in there. I haven't started eating and waiting 30 minutes before I drink anything. I think that will probably be the hardest thing for me.

As far as eating out, I eat out alot too. When you order, ask the waitress to put half of your order in a to go box. That way you won't see it and you won't be tempted to eat it all.

@NISI, everyone that I have talked to that has had the surgery, all say the same thing. Take this 6 months and learn all that you can about the surgery, preop, and post op. Just in my first month, I've learned alot. I'm sure there is much more that I can learn. Although I gave a half hearted effort this first month, I seriously want to see how much I can lose in the remaining months.

@Fabric Wife, thank you. I've heard of people not being able to eat Pasta or shrimp with the LapBand. Those are my favorites. But trying to eat a hamburger with a fork, I might laugh at myself. :lol: I am taking this time to learn all that I can about what I'll be going through. It's been very interesting thus far.

@Honk, thanks for the advise. And you hit it right on....my issue is Portion Control. I'm trying to eat more vegetables and Protein. I think I'd be ok, if I can get this under control.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
