I begin my liquid diet on Tuesday and my surgery is scheduled for 2/5/13. I am excited yet nervous. I wish it hadn't come to this but I believe with all of my heart that after years of yo-yo dieting, a 92# weight gain, diabetes and high blood pressure that I must have this physical restraint device to make a permanent change. I am 41 years old with a 9 year old son and I want to be around for a long time to watch him grow up!. I am scared to have anesthesia. I feel like I let my son down because I now have to have surgery to help me get my life back. I am tired of my body getting in the way of itself and being sore all of the time. I am scared that I won't have the willpower to do liquids. If I could do that I wouldn't so over weight! What are some helpful tips that got you through this first hurdle?

I think most of us have been where you are right now. Yoyo dieting, wondering how we let ourselves get in this terrible shape. What is wrong with us, etc etc....

First, don't look at letting your son down, you are beginning a journey to give your son a healthier happier mommy and one day grandma to his children. Your doing this for him, not against him.

I'm proud of you for recognizing you need help to get you there.

On having anesthesia, there will be so many ppl and monitors watching over you. I've been knocked out 5 times and its the best.lol First your there and then you're waking up in recovery.

Everyone is always nervous about this and you wouldn't be human if you weren't, but you will do fine. The ppl looking out for you are professionals.

Try to keep your eyes on the prize. A new you, being able to run around with your son, shopping in normal size clothes dept. all the good stuff health and happiness give you.

Last believe you deserve it all, b/c you do. Everyone deserves health!

My thoughts & prayers will be with you for a speedy recovery and great success. I am truly happy with my band and you will be too.

Best wishes

Please dont think you have let your son down. You are making good decisions right now for yourself. You will be healthier and you can do this. I have 6 kids. My youngest is 6 years old and told me today how proud of me she is. They understand. He will understand you are doing this for your health. Just think.. in a few weeks you will have restriction but you will still be able to eat things your son does. Take the opportunity to teach him good food habits. They learn from watching us. Just talk to him about anything he might want to know. When I decided to do this all the kids had questions. Now they are all on board. My 14 year old even makes my broth for me sometimes when i am tired.

The thought of being under is scarier than being under. The last thing my doctor said to me was Nite Nite.. then I woke up in recovery lol. The nurses were super great. I was cold so they wrapped heated blankets around me. My favorite nurse said, "Honey get used to it. The more weight you lose the more you will get cold. " This is a foreign concept to me. I am always hot!

Honestly.. I hated the preop but once that scale started going backwards, I was like Hell yeah.. I can do this. You can do it too. We believe in you! Believe in yourself too! I agree with Maddysgram.. you deserve good health!

It is so normal to be nervous! Ask any questions you have at all!

Thank you ladies for your encouraging words. You brought tears to my eyes. I actually decided to start my liquid diet two days early! My son is begging me not to do it. He keeps telling me, "I love you like this Mom"! I am educating him as I go. Fingers crossed... Blessings and best wishes to you both!

I completely understand and agree with everything you are feeling. I'm 38 with a 7 and 4 year old. I hate that it has come to surgery but I feel this is the best step to take for my future and the future of my children. I want to play with them. I want to take them to Disney World and enjoy it! I am on my last day of the pre-op diet. It really went by much faster than I thought. You can do it! My surgery is tomorrow at 9am. I'm very nervous about being put to sleep but know that this is the best decision for me! Good luck with your pre-op diet. SF Jello and chicken broth have been my best friends!

Best wishes for your surgery. Try to help your son understand that doing something to improve your health is in his best interests. Even my adult daughters feared for me to have surgery. When it is done and you begin to feel better, he will come around. Prayers for you both.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
