Liquid Diet Is Killing Me

Recommended Posts

I was banded on January 10. I haven't been nauseous or thrown up at all. I'm on a liquid diet for two more weeks until I can graduate to mushy foods. I feel fine and am always hungry. I don't understand why I can't eat other foods. Does anyone know the reason? I do better with rules when I understand why.

My incisions feel good and I haven't had much gas pain or bloating. I am having some pain where I think my port is. It's like it's under my ribs. Is that normal?

Every doctor gives different instructions. You have stitches on the inside and when you eat your stomach constricts to help push food along. liquid diets minimize this movement and gives your stomach and stitches more time to heal. (at 1 week post op I asked my dr's about exercise and I was told that I didn't want to 'pop a stitch' was said.......yikes, pop a stitch). Perhaps you can call your dr's office and talk to them. I was told to put cottage cheese in my cream Soups and blend them, extra Protein that keeps you full longer. Try to get more Protein in to control the hunger.

As with instructions, everyone seems to have their port in different locations. Usually it is under your largest incision. Mine is about 2 inches above my bellybutton, to the right a wee bit.

I know of no bander who has died from the liquid diet. It sounds melodramatic bu hardly realistic. Keep on plan and this will pass soon. Do allow for the time to completely heal inside. You will be glad you did!

Ditto about stitch concern. Yes this is really sucky you'll get no argument from me. Best of luck this too will pass.

The liquid diet is just making me really excited about graduating to different foods. Never been so excited about getting to eat healthy foods before so it has its good point. And yup so far I am still alive ;)

mainly because you insdies are still heaing and eating something like a pizza could hurt you..i wrote that bc my dr's nurse told me a person did just that 3 days after surgery..needless to say she ended up in the hospital..but all dr's are different.and different time frames of post op dieting....its just alittle while longer and though it seems like forever doing liquids, it is there for a reason....my port area was sore/tender for about a month..each day you will get better

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
