post operative liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on the 16th. I would love to hear specifically what and how much and how often you consumed liquids for the first two weeks. I am having a very hard time deciding when and what to "eat". I know the guidelines, but I would just love to know exactly how other people did it. I am already down 17 lbs, including pre-op diet, and I am thrilled with being banded. Thanks for your help.

I was on liquids for 4 weeks after surgery, and let me tell you, I was STARVING! I swear I was preoccupied with food 24/7 because I was so dang hungry.

I had a cup of liquid every 2 hours. It was the only way I could handle the hunger. So I might have a Protein shake for lunch, then 2 hours later a cup of broth, then 2-3 hours later another Protein Shake for dinner. Then some V8 light fruit blend juice for a snack 2 hours after that.

I did however count calories, just to be sure I wasn't drinking too much.

Best wishes!

Thank you Missy, I just don't want to do the wrong thing. I am not really hungry yet, but I already miss food. I am such a food addict, so I just have to learn how to nourish my body without eating crap. lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
