Liquid diet vs low-carb diet

Recommended Posts

I know that every surgeon has different requirements, but I'm curious of how many of you are on a liquid pre-op diet vs a low-carb pre-op diet vs a "wacky just eat better before surgery" diet. And, just for curiosity sake, what is your starting BMI?

I'll go first. I'm on a low-carb diet, but I'm a vegetarian so it's a little tricky for me. I am going to be on a modified liquid/low carb diet (because how many eggs can I eat in a day?). Basically, I'm going to replace all of the fajita meat that I can't eat with high Protein Shakes. Just so you know, my surgeon's nutritionist created my plan - I'm not improvising. My starting BMI is 40.

I personally don't do low carb. For me, it's simply not realistic long term and I lose great when eating healthy carbs.

I am careful to get in at least 60g of Protein daily, though. I also make sure I never eat more than a cup of food per meal and stay between 1000-1200 calories per day.

My starting BMI was scary high, it was 72.

EDIT: Bah, I missed the "pre-op" diet part of your post. Sorry!! This is my daily post op diet. My bad!

i had all liquid pre op and post op for 2 weeks (hadnt had Soup since) and my bmi was 61 or 62....dont recall

i eat lean Proteins, veggies and fruit

i was (when my son was little in pre school/elementary) school a veggie-tarian so you can eat lots of yummies to help with this...however, irregardless if its high carb or low carb, meat or no meat etc, 3500 calories is a pound (drank or ate).....so when you eat your allotted amounts, choose high Protein and good filling foods to help. wishing you all the best.....

what makes our world go around by us all being different :)

I did Adkins for 2 weeks pre op, my bmi was 37.

I still focus my meals around high Protein and low carbs. It works for me. My bmi is 25.4 now.

Hi ~

I am pre-op, surgery is Feb 14th, and my BMI is 35. Doc said I dont have to do pre op diet, (first time anyone told I wasnt heavy enough!!) If it was any higher it was to be Liquid, SlimLine. I still have chosen to incorporate one meal a day with the Slim Line just to get use to it as I know it will be part of my life and diet for the few few weeks after surgery. When blendered with a banana, it's pretty good. I have a Vita Mix blender that blends the "crap" out of everything, a good way to get the healthy stuff in.

My doc explained to me that the pre op diet was a way of ridding the liver of some fat and making it easily to work around during surgery. Slim Band in Toronto, (not my clinic) regardless of BMI doesnt require liquid diet two weeks before, just unlimited chicken, fish and fresh veggies.

Also my doc told me two nights before the surgery to go have the either the biggest hamburger and fries I can find or a tasty Chinese smorg and then the day before have a huge stack of pancakes for breakfast!!!! (Now this is the GP doc in Calgary telling me this, as my surgeon is in Toronto, and my GP doc had the lap band surgery done last September by the same doc and has lost 65 lbs so far)....GP Doc said "Go, Enjoy the food cause you wont be having it for a long time !!!!

Not sure if I will splurge, but it was funny!

Starting BMI 42, I had no pre-op diet. I was told the day before do liquids other than that nada.

Now, like Missy, I eat realistically. For me this mean I do eat carbs, but just less and healthy ones. I eat about 1200 calories a day and do cardio (elliptical/jog/walk).

Ditto what Maddysgram said, only it was by choice, not doctor's orders.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
