Fitness shoes!

Recommended Posts

Check area for running stores.. I live in a small community but we have 2... the one I went to had me put on these flat shoes and walk on the treadmill while it videoed and analyzed my walking.. then they told me the kind of shoe I needed... they are BROOKS and they are AWESOME....

I know people love the minimalist shoes but I think if you are just starting the journey (sorry.. not sure where you are or started on weight)... heavier people need support. I felt I had NO support in the minimalist shoes.

ALSO, because I went to a specialist store per se... they let me just walk and walk and walk around for a good 20 min so I could make sure they didn't just fit and feel good right when I put them on.

I just thought of another resource.. if you don't know if you have a store close by.. find a gym or somewhere that may have a running club or organize marathons or 5k's and ask them if there is a store close by..

Good luck!

Awesome !! Let me know how it goes and good luck : ) get some good socks too its very worth it!!

Lee

Listen to Lee!! Socks are almost equally as important as shoes! I have loved Nike socks, not sure the style name but they have a band around the arch that keeps the sock from twisting or shifting, and they have the "tabs" on the back that helps with preventing blisters. I have a hard time with blisters and these were the best I found...until recently...I ordered some Injinji socks...and while I haven't put in any major miles in them yet, I have worn them all day and they felt great. The ones I got are actually "toe socks" which sounds weird, but I was prone to getting blisters on the bottom of my toes (odd I know) all I can figure is my feet are made weird and my toes are just hugging each other or something causing that friction, these socks keep that from happening!! And they have the tab in front and back. That's just two that I have found that work for me...the idea of buying one or two pair and trying them out is great advice, I have a drawer of socks from buying more than one and not liking them (new balance and Adidas mainly) good luck!! And depending on what part of FL there is a great running store in Pensacola and if I'm not mistaken they have one in ft Walton beach too I just can't think of the name of it right now. Bummer. I can find out if that's close to you though!

Hi Crystal - blisters can take you out of the game, right ?! With the problem you are having you may want to get some Body Glide and use on toes before you put the socks on. It's very popular product for triathletes and long distance runners. It's inexpensive and comes like a stick (like deodorant). You can prob get it at the running store or you can order online.

Have great day !

Thanks a lot Crystal! I never realized socks being important, But now I can see that. Working, I stand all day long and my feet would glide this and that way, my socks would crunch up or twist, it was very annoying. As of recently, I am no longer working, but I guess that just gives me more time for fitness! Yaaaah :)

Thanks Lee! I actually used body glide and it did help! I also tried moleskin....my feet took a beating as I tried to find what worked and didn't work lol fortunately once I finally went to the running "expert" and got the right shoes all of my problems went away except the blisters on the toes next to my pinky toes. Unfortunately I'm really stubborn and trained for and completed my half marathon before I went to the running store (makes sense right?? Wait until after you've torn your feet up to take care of them??) so now I deal with two toenails that falloff every 6 or so months and they aren't cute when they grow back. Doc says "cost of being an athlete" yeah he said that to a >300 lb gal he was seeing for ins purposes for WLS!! I kinda giggled! Now so that I don't look like a complete idiot, while training for the race the only problem I had was the occasional blister and I ticked off a tendon in my foot on a long training day so I didn't have constant issues while training...but on race day it was much different terrain - many hills! Which I had not trained on too many...so I'm guessing my feet were moving differently etc with all the elevation change but by just mile 6 I knew my feet were bleeding but I also knew if I stopped I wouldn't start again so I just pushed and finished then I realized it was pretty much as bad as it felt when I pulled those shoes off! Wow...so now you have my feet story with even more details than I intended on ever telling anyone! I suppose I will lea w it be and hope that someone else won't be as stupid as I was and heed the advice you're giving Lee!

I LOVE U MAN! That's an awesome story and inspirational - I don't see "stupidity" in your story I see a Powerful Warrior Woman who would not and will not be denied! That will give you strength in the future you broke a great mental barrier and pushed through to the end. I hope they had some seriously sweet blinged out finishers metals ; )

Now you know - you learn as you go as we all do - 13.1 miles is a long as way huh ? Have you considered doing Triathlons? Sprint distance to start - you have the heart for it : ) they are actually easier on the body and very mentally and physically challenging. Give it some thought - you have time to train before the season launches.

That's kind of the point of a minimalist shoe. No Support. It's supposed to be like barefoot, and it's not for everyone, but I think size isn't the issue to be honest. You have to ease into them. You have to wear them just for a little bit every day, then increase. Because they are totally nothing like the shoes most of us are used to wearing. But there are many variations that have more to them the a Vibram.

I went to foot solutions today, and they had me try on a couple pairs of shoes although they didn't have much selection. I did like the Brooks addiction. I have a very wide foot and my arch is on the medium to high. I tend to lean my weight on the outter side of the shoes. I didn't want to buy something right away, I wish there was a place with a bigger selection. That shoe is a walking shoe btw. I am really thinking of that one.. but my search continues!

Good morning : ) ok here is my feedback - that shoe would prob be ok but I am glad you waited - Find a Running Store as we talked about - You are now an Athlete... A powerful woman ... A Warrior in a battle for your Freedom and Life! Foot solutions is for older weak hurting people - this is Not you. (I realize this is an over dramatized over simplified characterization) THE MENTAL edge is crucial here... The bump you get from being part of the running clan ...even if walking. Brooks Addiction 10 is a running shoe which looks like a running shoe they also make a "Walker"that looks like a clunky shoe you might find on an assisted living resident ; ) not a Athlete not a Warrior. Find the running version become a member of the clan - go to the Running Store - join their email list - transform how you think of yourself then transform your self through action - 30 Seconds at a time : )

Ok ...whew ... got on my box and started preaching there - sorry about that - I feel passionately about what I know works as it has for me and others.

Have an awesome Monday! DON'T DELAY ... Get the shoes - protect your feet - walk toward your "destiny" Today!

Hope in Your Future is Power in Your Present!

Lee

(I was a 13 4E so I know about Wide feet w/weightloss now 12 -12.5 2E)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
