THE THIRD TIME IS NO CHARM!!

What a long and disappointing journey!....Traveled to Detroit from Pittsburgh so as to not wait for insurance guidlines and paid myself.....Dr. discovered largest hiatal hernia he had ever seen and HAD TO REPAIR it......While in there he did the band.....Admitted that BOTH should never be done at the same time.....But because of travel he did.....Tons of scar tissue left....Band had me lose 20-30 pounds, put it back on, but I never felt the good restriction.....Went to a local Dr. and he said he'd do it over.....He did.....RESULTS THE SAME......I then had gastric bypass, and it was very difficult because of the previous two surgeries.....I dropped around 35 and ate what I was supposed to etc....Had little restriction.....I was very distraught....I exercised my Buns off to avoid putting any back on......All of this took 2 years out of my life!!!!.....My gastric Dr. told me that only 10 percent of people who are banded meet their goal....I talked to my primary care Dr. and he prescribed TOPOMAX.....I lost all the weight that I wanted to without feeling hungry!.....I'm now at my goal.......Think long and hard about surgery......Don't get me wrong as some can do it, but I WAS VERY UNFORTUNATE!...MY BEST TO ALL OF YOU!

Sorry for your problems, but I bet about half the ppl on this forum had hernia repair at the time of surgery, including myself.

well, if a banded person or a bypass or sleeve person overeats, does not follow the guidelines, they can either not lose or gain back what they lost. its just common sense. if you use a tool correctly (then it can be successful). i also had a hernia repair done as maddys and so far so good.

Can I ask you what year you had your LB placed? Just want to know if you had the old model or what. Thanks

Due to the travel, etc. did you ever get any fills? Perhaps, that was part of the problem. Also, were there issues w/ your first band itself? It seems odd they would remove it and put a new one, if there weren't medical issues with it.

Fe fi fo fum,

I smell the blood of an Englishman.

No, wait a minute. That doesn't rhyme. I'll try again.

Fe fi fo fum,

I smell the blood of a cinnamon roll.

Or something that rhymes with roll.

In response to the one question, the first band was 5.5 years ago.....To "Mean Jean!".....As a contributing editor, I find your attempt at humor quite putrid, to say the least..How do you know all the details of my weight loss and surgeries, and as only one example, the meds I had to take after the surgeries, and what they caused???...Are you a surgeon too?.....In a subject as delicate and individualistic as weight loss with so many variables, your "assumptions" are quite erroneous, and based on your false perceptions!....Attempting to "make fun of someone" is "not" fitting for a so called editor!....FE FI FO FUM....YOU THINK YOU'RE SOMNEONE!....ALAS, YOU'RE NOT!

I had hernia repair at the same time as my band. How experienced was your surgeon? It's odd that he wasn't comfortable doing both at the same time. My hernia was so large that it stuck out under my ribcage. My surgeon recommended that I wait for my band to be put in to do the repair to my hernia because that way I wouldn't be put under anestesia twice in a short period of time. I also think it is harder for some that have surgeons further away. You can't just pop in and get a fill or unfill when you need it! I'm sorry that you had the experience that you did. I know when others are succeeding and your having a hard time it can be frustrating! Unfortunately, not everyones bodies are the same! Therefore, results will not be consistent. I am curious, I take topomax for my Migraines, is it now used as a diet drug? When I take it, it knocks me out. Do they use another drug with it to counteract that effect? Do you have to continue to take it? Anyway, Congratulations on your successful weight loss! Whether we have used the band, bypass, or prescriptions, all of us are looking for the same results! HEALTH! As long as we get there it doesn't matter the road we had to travel!

i only have one question, why take a diet pill (topamax) to lose weight after you had 2 lap bands and a bypass???

seems to me, possible issues with all 3 surgeries is kinda hard to believe OR, you were not adhering to the proper eat more cals then you burn off theory. so if you finally lost weight and got healthy, good for you.

No one is being mean but I am sorry if you had two lapbands and gastric bypass and only lost 20lbs it was not the surgery. It was you. There are many of us that have been successful and some with complications and have still been successful and yes they do hernia repair at the same time as the band. As far as the bypass there is no reason to not lose weight unless you are just eating what you want. You may gain it back after a year but no reason what so ever to not lose weight with the bypass. No need to be down on weight loss surgery because so many have succeeded at this journey

My hernia was the largest the Dr. in Detroit had ever seen in his 30 years.....But he did both....The surgery took 6 hours!.....My wife was worried sick and never informed....Additionally, I was supposed to have a room waiting for me after post op recovery, but spent 9 hours in the recovery room "alone," only patient with a nurse and my wife.....Got my room at 4 in the a.m......I had complications with all 3 surgeries....So, believe it or not Carolina gal, I did have issues with all of the surgeries..Lots of scar tissue became an issue amongst other things!..Congratulations to both of you on your weight loss!.....Topamax is "not" a diet pill, but rather prescribed to prevent Migraines and epilepsy....Off label uses include weight loss....For many it works, for some it doesn't!..You must find the right dose!.....I started at 25 mg a day per week, then slowly up to 75-100mg, and food became something I really didn't care for!....I believe that lap bands do work, and I have nothing against them....Weight loss is an ongoing battle.....It consumes us at times....But the light at the end of the tunnel after the journey is worth it no matter how we get there!.....Good luck to all and think "thin!"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
