eating red meat after surgery

Recommended Posts

I am curious. The paperwork I read for after surgery states I should not eat red meat for 3 months. Any one else out there been told the same thing.

I've been wanting to only have it as a treat anyway but I'm just curious

No. I was told to be careful with red meat as some new bandsters may have difficulty swallowing red meat. But, it's never been a problem food for me as long as I take small bites and chew well.

Every doctor is different. Mine was about 5-6 weeks. Filet is the most tender and the easiest to chew. Pork is hard to chew. Meatballs is one of the first soft foods I was allowed. I did get sick of them for a while. I find salmon is a great food, health wise and soft and easy to go down. Good luck. I never tried any foods before I was told I could. Some people do, their business.

I was told red meat was fine if chewed to the consistency of baby food.... and let me tell you that is way easier said then done. I am 2 years out and older than grounf beef I just dont eat alot of red meat because it tires my jaw out!!! I am fine with fish, pork and chicken and ground beef... but I have to chew it all up very well.

And... I do miss biting into a juicy rare steak.... but I prefer being thin.

My doctor never said anything about red meat. I was just told to be careful and chew meat well. I haven't tried steak since being banded (06/2012) except chopsteak which is an extra fine ground hamburger meat and I have no problems with that. If I do hambuger meat I justh have to chew it well.

I have the most problem with pork, so I have given up on that.

I was never told not to eat red meat but like most others, i was told to be careful and chew real good. I have only tried to eat steak once since being banded and was only able to get down about 2 little bitty pieces. The rest i couldnt chew well enough so i spit it out. I dont really have a problem with any type of meat as long as its not over cooked. Believe me, if i cant chew it up to almost liquid, its getting spit out...lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
