PCOS getting better?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any stories with their PCOS getting better as the weight has come off? This is one of the main reasons I am having lap band. MY OBGYN told me that if I lose enough weight I wouldn't have to take a pill to get my cycle! I was on metformin but she recently put me on birth control, and believe in me my cycles have been horrid. I have unbelievable Hair growth, so I was just curious if anyone has seen a difference?

PCOS is one of the main reasons I'm getting banded as well. Seriously cannot remember my last period, I can grow facial hair like a dude, losing weight is so hard, and then there's the bouts of unexplained acne and mood swings. Yay.

I have high hopes that losing weight will alleviate these symptoms. I was also on metformin but after two years of pills and no change, I decided it was time for weight loss surgery. Getting my band on March 6, 2013 and I can't wait.

Congrats on making the choice. I am getting banded tomorrow morning. Believe me, I am sooooo ready to have half my syptoms go away. I am currently getting laser hair removal for my face, I have had 2 sessions out of 6. Which is what I will need to eliminate all my facial hair, in which I can probably grow a freaking beard! Not to mention I am fair skinned and dark dark hair. THE WORST! I have it in several other places too! Ewwww!

How did the surgery go?? I hope you're feeling ok, walking a lot, and stayin' positive!

Ahh yes, the laser hair removal for us fair skinned, dark hair ladies. I did it for over 20 sessions and while it helped, it wasn't nearly as successful as I hoped so I put it on pause while I work with my doc on the hormone crap and try to lose some more of this weight. Sort of felt like money down the drain. I'm excited for you, taking care of yourself is the best medicine!

I was banded as treatment for PCOS, Insulin Resistance and Diabetes... A month ago for the first time in 6 years I ovulated...!! So yes I think this is a great help with PCOS and to be honest need to work more with my band... Havent had huge losses but I feel better for it...

When were you diagnosed with PCOS?

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 10 years ago; medication did nothing, birth control didn't really help and the symptoms have just gotten more intense as I get older ugh!

Congrats on ovulating finally! That's a big win!

Thank you! I found my symptoms got worse as I was getting older too... Not a lot has changed with mine although I think the hair on my face is finally starting to thin out slightly - yay!!

Good luck with your band! I think its well worth it at least it was for me...

Hi ladies! I wish I would have known about the lap band sooner. I had a total hysterectomy when I was 28 because of PCOS and endometriosis. When you treat one it makes the other so much worse. I had two surgeries before my hysterectomy. One to remove all the endometriosis and the other was to drill the cysts and try to jump start my ovaries to ovulate. Between all that and all the fertility pills it made me almost crazy. When I had a period for 4 months straight of heavy bleeding I finally went to my doctor and told him to take it all out. I couldn't do it anymore. I found after my surgery that when I did get off the hormones I have been the happiest, less moody in my life. I have come to the conclusion that my body wasn't used to the hormones so when I was taking them or injecting them in my body it was causing my moods to swing way outta control. So now my moods are controlled, the bleeding is no longer, I still have the major facial hair problem and the weight problem. My surgery date is set for the 24th of this month. I am ready to tackle it one problem at a time. I would love any pointers and/or issues you have found that may relate. :)

Hi Mandi!

Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I'm 2 months post-op and very happy with the choice of getting banded. In two months, I've seen some major changes due to the weight loss; i'm now getting (almost) regular periods, my breakouts aren't as bad, and my mood swings have improved too. I think the battle with the facial hair is going to be an ongoing thing, but I do feel like it may be thinning ever so slightly.

I'm sure yo've read this other places on the forum, but the band isn't a magic bullet. I didn't expect to have to work so hard every single day but it's such a good tool that it makes the effort worth it. And seeing changes in my body (not just on the scale) is the BEST reward ever!

Good luck next week! Stay in touch :)

The exact reason why I joined this group. Recently diagnosed with PCOS after months and months of no period. Still my OBGYN is tinkering with different meds - I am ready to tell her to quit it! Ive had enough, hoping to get a surgery date in the next week as all of my pre-testing is finally over with. Never though I would be saying this - but I cant wait to have a period again.

Hello ladies! I sure shyed away from this website! Need to get back at it!

I am approaching my 10th month anniversary next Monday! I cannot believe it! I have lost a little over 70lbs now! Holy Crap! I wanted to given an update in regards to PCOS!

I haven't been taking birth control for the last 3 months because I am not in a relationship and I wanted to see what would happen! Great news, I am now getting my Periods regularly. I have lost enough weight! Woohoo! The hair growth is still the same, although, I got laser hair removal this past spring on my facial hair and I can honestly say BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE! I got a groupon on it with a local spa and it actually is moderated by doctors so it is very legit! It really hurt the first time but after that in and out in less than 10 minutes tops! Look around for groupons on those can save you a BUTT LOAD of money!

I can actually say that I feel tons better. I joke all the time when aunt flo comes to town wishing she wasn't in town because I really forgot how annoying she is but I know she is healthy! I hope all your ladies are finding progress and peace! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
