Questions about complications with Dr. Aceves

Recommended Posts

really, does anyone have any adverse complications with dr. aceves? I haven't heard anything! I am also curious about post operatively, when a band slips, what happens? Is this a dire emergency or what's the deal? I am scheduled to go in 2 weeks, am active, and am wondering how long/laid up people were...please advise thanks :Banane04:

Sorry you haven't had any responses yet. I don't know Dr. Aceves so I can't really comment there. I understand slipped bands are different for everyone. Some people have pain and can't even get Water down. Some people get a complete absence of restriction and can eat anything with no pain. Just like everything else about the band it seems that there is no one symptom that everyone shares. If it's not painful and not keeping you from getting food and water it's not a huge emergency, but I don't think anyone would recommend waiting to take care of it. I know that sometimes a band will slip back into place with a complete unfill.

As far as activity level goes, my doctor told me no lifting, stretching, or soaking (as in swimming) for 6 weeks post-op.

Sorry I couldn't give you more information. Good luck to you.

Hi -

I was banded by Dr. Aceves in September 2005 and have had no problems at all. Personally, I took a week off at work (and amvery glad I did). I could have possibly went back a day or so sooner, but choose to just take the leave.

Dr. Aceves told me that in the case of a band slip it is not "life threatening" so you would have time to fly back over to them to get it repaired and/or find someone in the states to do the repair. Nina (Dr. Aceves co-ordinator) is wonderful about trying to set up flights/coverage to the hospital etc for clients that need fills.

Because of the length of the flight (I live in GA) I choose to have my fills done through fillcenterusa which are located in various areas throughout the states.

Hope this helps.

I had my band done by Dr. Aceves in 12/04 and I had no issues and think his prices and his bedside mannor and skill was exceptional. I would recommend him to everyone. I felt that he had more experience then many US doctors. I would only suggest that if the trip to Mexico is long for you that you have a fill doc set up before you go because some doctors won't fill you if you were banded out of the country.

I was back to work within 4 days of the surgery. I have a desk job though. I had no complications. I loved that any questions I had Nina responed via email quicker then many doctor's offices in the US respond to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
