3-6 month out eating questiom?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I'm about 2 days out from being done with all the pre-work for the insurance company to decide if I'll be approved for surgery & I have a couple of questions:)

1-what is the first month after surgery like? What will I be eating/drinking?

2-3 months post what will I be eating?

3-6 months post what will I be eating?

I'm trying to envision what my new lifestyle will be like to determine if I can really go thru with all of this!

Hopefully your doctor will have a pre op session on what you're supposed to eat both the days prior to surgery and then the month after. And give you a hand out to take home so you can look back at it.

My doctor required clears plus Protein Shakes made with just milk for 7 days. Yes I know most Protein shakes are not clear. The next 7 days were smooth Soups such as Tomato or squash plus protein shakes made with just milk. Week 1 of mushies was smooth yogurt, cottage cheese and ricotta cheese. I could also still have smooth Soup. Week 2 of mushies was soft protein like canned chicken or tuna which I mixed with low fat laughing cow cheese. I was then allowed to move to solids. In general my doctor frowns on processed carbs like Pasta or bread. And I don't really like rice.

By 3 months out I was eating regular solids. Personally I try to stay relatively low carb and low fat. I've never been a drinker so that's really not an issue for me. I live alone so there's no 1 else here to eat junk food so no reason for me to buy it.

I try to live by the 90/10 rule. Eat really healthy 90 percent of the time and the other 10 have some treats. For me it means not keeping fatty foods in my house. But if I go to a family birthday party once every 3 months I work a small piece of birthday cake into my daily calorie count. And since crackers are a trigger food for me I don't keep them in my house but I can have 1-2 at a party.

Unfortunately that really depends on your doctor's post op diet. You'll find they all differ pretty greatly from surgeon to surgeon.

As for myself, I had a really strict post op diet:

1st month- I was on liquids. Yup, all liquids for entire month.

2-3 months- by the end of month 2, I was finally back on regular food again

3-6 months- I eat whatever I like, I just eat less of it and try to make healthy food choices

Good luck!

All drs seem to have different criteria they follow but it's basically the same for the most part...I will answer your question based on my experience. You will want to check with your dr before deviating from his rules.

I had to give up carbonation..the is my drs #1 rule. No food is off limits once On solids but my band isn't fond of rice or thick Pasta.< /p>

First month

Week one Clear Liquids

Week two creamy liquids

Week three mushies....like yogurt, hummus, mashed veggies, mashed potatoes, oatmeal...anything blended to the consistency of baby food

Once on solids at week 4 I started eating the way I did throughout my journey. 1000 calories each day with portion controls being paramount. I ate three meals a day of 3 oz protien, 1/2 c veggies and 1/4 starch. I was allowed 2 Snacks of fruit or a sugar free treet or something salty like 10 small pretzel sticks

Thanks! My Dr does have a couple classes I'd have to take if I move forward, that is if my insurance approves it, I started 3 months ago right at a BMI of 40. Tomorrow is my final visit before they submit it to see if approved. I really haven't wanted to get my hopes up incase they don't approve it:(

Another question-when did u get banded & how much have you lost?

I'm 5'3" and started at 228. I'm now down to 223...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
