You can eat whatever you want, just make sure you "spend" more calories than you take in.

I eat Lean Cusine, Smart Ones, and the like because they are easy. I try and make healthy meals and take left overs, but sometimes these prefabs work great.

I just had a Lean Cuisine (Spaghetti with meatballs) for lunch. Could only eat about 1/2 of it before I was full. They do very well. I actually like Smart Ones a little more than the Lean Cuisine dinners.

I'm sure they'd be fine to eat....but wouldn't you want to use your calories on fresh foods that aren't processed? I quit eatting micro meals a while back because they simply have way too much sodium in them. In an emergency, sure...but everyday? I just think there are better things out there.

Actually if you read the nutritional labels, aside from slightly higher in sodium, they are very healthy. Just because something is packaged doesn't necessarily mean it's not healthy.

My nutritionist actually prefers Leans Cuisines to a lot of lunch meat and other common sandwich foods because they are healthier.

Yes, if comparing to sandwhichy stuff, I could see it being better. By fresh I was more referring to what I typically try to eat...green salads, chicken breast, fish, veggies, etc.

And this just goes to show you that every nutritionist is different...mine told me to stay away from micro meals and focus on fresh foods.

well, here is my *thoughts*

eat what you want. if it works for you and the nutritionist, even better. i say sometimes, those little boxed items are the bomb and hit the spot at work etc...each to their own.

but i take time to make my meals so i dont have to use a box. just me and what works.

My mother, and her mother before her were proponents of unprocessed foods years before it became a popular topic in nutritionist news. They taught me in their ways, and I have resisted the nutritionist telling me to use artificial sweetened anything. I'd much rather do without sweeteners than to go the artificial sweetener route.

Unless the micro box lunches are using whole grain for their wide assortment of pastas which seem to be staples of their offerings, they are not delivering the nutrients to the level of what bariatric patients need.

Honestly though...I have always skipped going through the center aisles of the grocery store, with the exception to pick up my freshly ground coffee. I read nutrition labels, and it has been a true education on what to avoid. I just believe that you are healthier if you rely on preparing your foods from basic and natural ingredients at home. That way you always know what you are eating, and can control the fat and sodium levels. Does it take some additional time and planning ahead...yes it does. I believe that I and my family are worth it.

When I was a child, we had fruit and nuts for dessert on a regular basis. Every birthday, we were allowed to have cake and ice cream..."Kool Aid" never was in my house, and I never missed it. That's also the way our 3 sons were raised...and grandsons are being raised the same way.

I struggled with my pre and post op diets...as I was required to rely on SF/FF popsicles and Protein drinks which had so many chemicals which I would have needed a graduate level degree in chemistry to understand.

Everyone is different...but I do feel that on the whole, nutritionists are not well schooled in the possible long term side effects of relying on artificial ingredients added to processed foods. Chemicals of that nature were never intended to be ingested by people...IMHO.

Others mileage may vary...

I was at the market a but ago and all the "healthy" processed meals are loaded with sodium and things we are not supposed to eat after banding. What surprised me the most was that Kashi is one of the worst culprits. Anyway we should not be able to eat that much food at a time. Remember 1/4 cup 3 x a day!

Perhaps...however both processed meats and processed frozen "meal in a box" selections are not necessarily a valid comparison. Both are processed, and have chemical additives. Of course the NUT should advise that we should avoid any foods which have nitrates/nitrates added to them...they are known carcinogens.

Basics which don't have the nutrients removed are still going to be both healthier and taste better IMHO...

I noticed weight loss stalling while eating frozen meals. ( in the past that is)

If you try them but stall in weight loss that may be why. ( side note: beef also has that effect on me)

I also never eat lunchmeat. Grilled fish, chicken, turkey and rarely pork. That works for me. Or Gould I say I get good results in the least mount of time and I feel good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
