Hello all! I am a newbie here. I am scheduled to have my surgery on 2/8. The clinic I'm scheduled with assures me if I have surgery on Friday, I'll be good to go Monday to work. I know everyone is different but is this true? How did it go for you?

I had surgery on a Tuesday and returned to a desk job the following Monday.

It depends on your job and pain level. If you can take a week off I would suggest that at least.

Good luck.

I wouldn't suggest trying to go back that quick. I have a very liberal sick leave policy and took two weeks. I could have taken longer, but didn't need to. I had surgery on a Tuesday, and could have probably went back on the following Monday if I had a desk job. I don't. I would suggest trying to plan on taking the next full week off. You will probably not feel 100% for a few days. It really depends more on your job duties.

I was banded on 12/27/12 and returned to work yesterday (1/8/13). Though, I resumed working from home 1/1/13. I would reiterate that a lot of it depends on your job duties -- I have a desk job and really don't do anything physical beyond walking 0.5 miles from my parking garage to my office.

I would say that even for my desk job, having surgery on Friday and returning to work Monday is probably...optimistic, though not unheard of.

Thanks for the responses. I do have a desk job, so theres not much physical duty there. Sounds like I may need to take some sick days though.

You might be okay, but that's pretty quick. I also recommend a full week. You might not be too sore, but you have to deal with keeping hydrated and sticking to a proper diet (and subsequently feeling weak and dizzy from adjusting to all of that).

Good luck with your surgery! I bet you're excited. :D

I just got banded on Friday and for me there was no way that I could have gone back Monday just from the fact I was still taking the pain meds for the incision pain. Today was probably the first day I could have gone back if I was really pressed to, but I was lucky enough to take a week off with no problems. I think it's better to take the extra couple days and feel as good as you can before going back.

My surgeon recommended two weeks and I was glad that I took them. I am also a desk jockey. It is not only the actual surgery but also the general anaesthetic that you need to recover from.

Don't rush going back to work.

I had surgery on a Wednesday and went back to my desk job the following Monday. The hardest part was finding enough dresses that don't have a waist band that would be comfortable to wear. I felt fine only taking that much time off.

I had surgery last Friday and was supposed to return to work today(Wednesday). I had to take the rest of the week off because of the pain. Everyone is different though.

I must have a pretty high pain threshold. I had surgery on a Friday and was out and about on my feet for 8 hours on Monday running errands and shopping. I never took any pain meds. I just slept almost all day Saturday and part of Sunday. Monday I was feeling right as rain and I was driving the next day. I say see how you feel. If you need to take the time, then take it. Make sure you take care of yourself and don't overdo it!

I also have a desk job

I was in a lot of pain after surgery.i was weak from not eating. I didn't expect to feel that bad. I was off work a week and wished I had taken more sick leave.

Everyone seems different!

Everyone is pretty different. Whatever happens just listen to your body! I think (being newly banded myself on 12/21) that we are going to have to do that a whole lot from now on! :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
