Surgery done but ohhhh what a day/night!

Recommended Posts

So my mom and I had our surgeries yesterday! She went first about 8am doctor said everything went great, then it was my turn. Everything came out perfect. I slept alot, some nausea, had some pain around port area, but no gas pain! My poor mom on the other hand couldnt keep any fluids down! Kept throwing it up! She felt great otherwise! So hours and hours go by and they did an xray on her and her stomach is so swollen, nothing can pass through the band! So she had to stay over night :(

my dad and bf took me home and this morning and damn it hurts...especially around port area..walking, getting up, or sitting down, basically anything using your stomach muscle hurts!! This is normal right? I just took pain meds and put heating pad on. Any other suggestions??

Oh and please pray for my momma! She's in alot of pain :(

I will pray for your mom. I also had to stay overnight and until late evening due to pain and vomiting..this part will be over soon so hang in there..walk and water..walk and Water, okay? Also, I kept wearing that wrap thing on my stomach..forgot what its called. I felt that it t really supported my stomach as I moved around. I probably wore it 3 weeks bc my nurse never told me to stop and I liked it.

I tried to get up as much as possible..i never sat our layed more than an hour during the day and made every effort to walk during the night. I would walk about 15 min. No pain around my port ..my pain was mostly gas. The pain is awful..yes.

You have to walk a lot, that is what my Dr. told me to do and it was fine and had no pain.

I had pain at the port site...it's very normal. Feels like you did a million crunches! It helped to hold a pillow against by belly when getting up or down because that's when you engage those abs. Good luck on your journey and welcome to the other side!!!

The best thing I found for my port pain was an ice bag. I even took one with me to work. Walk around the house a little and see if you can poot, and put ice on your port that was the only thing that worked for me.

Can you remember what it was that you held around your stomach? I've 2 other lap surgeries (gall bladder & spleen), and my biggest problem was going from a sitting position to a laying down position and vice versa. I will probably have the same issue. Wish I had my old bed which sat high...but I don't. My surgery date is 30 Jan...just trying to be ready.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
