scared and excited, surgery 2 days away

Recommended Posts

Hey guys: I have been reading this sight for awhile and have been inspired by all of your stories. I will have my lapband surgery in 2 days, 3/10, and am getting pretty nervous. I guess its normal to fear the unknown.... Did any of you have any complications the first week after your surgery? My biggest fear is nauseousness and throwing up. My Doctor wants me on liquids for 6 weeks, and I'm "hoping" these 2 side effects will not be a problem if I follow the program. Can anyone give me insight into my first few days after surgery... and what to expect.. to help me with my jitters?! thanks so much!

Hi there,

I have seen a lot of people with the same fears. I never really had any fears, but I also thought I would bounce back a lot quicker than I actually did... No real complications, just normal aches and pains. I just had to find ways to make my life easier... lots of rest was the best thing to do.

6 weeks of liquids seems like an awful long time. Did you doctor give you any reason why he/she recommends you stay at this stage for so long? I don't even think Inamed recommends liquids for 6 weeks. There are some unslightly side affects of the liquid diet that I am glad only lasted a week for me. I was on Clear Liquids (with the exception of 2 Protein drinks per day) for one week and pureed foods for 2 weeks after that... I am now on 3 weeks of soft foods.

I wouldn't worry about nausea and vomiting. The doctors normally give some IV meds for this while you are in surgery and during your overnight hospital stay. I also had to show my doctor I had no problems keeping fluids down before I was released from the hospital and about 3 hours before I was released they gave me one last dose of anti-nausea meds. I never felt any nausea nor did I throw-up. I only had to take one sip of the barrium, so that didn't even make me sick or gag.

I am sure that you will do just fine. Feel free to post any questions here... the folks on this forum are very helpful.

Take Care and Congratulations!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
