I was banded 03/11/08 and had my second fill on 06/05/08. I also had my first PB 3 days later. GOSH....it hurt! I remember right after being banded they said to avoid sodas & drinking from a straw.

Well, I had a couple of little pretzel/cheese sandwich bites while at the Water park the other day. I had gotten a Dr. Pepper for my daughter & poured it into her water bottle so I could get a refill of Sprite for my son. There was some Dr. Pepper left in it, so I (not thinking) started to gulp it down so I could get right back into line & get my son's drink.

Within a minute or two I started getting a really bad pain near my right breast & chest pressure & feeling like a needed to burp. When I tried to burp I felt the soda fizzing up my chest. I had to keep pulling it up for about 5 minutes (got the slimes too). It happened again today after eating a few nuts & drinking water. The water wouldn't go down & I ended up throwing up the water.

So, I figured out that it wasn't just the soda, but the liquid getting backed up behind the food!

I WILL ALWAYS WAIT AT LEAST 20 MINUTES TO DRINK ANYTHING AFTER EATING!!!!! :tongue2:

I am having my first fill next week and am a bit nervous as I already have some restriction. While some have said that PBing is not a big deal becuase there is no stomach acid in there (and I agree) - I think the thing that bothers me when it happens to me (about once a week) is that it means that I lost control and did not do what I was supposed to do...so I hate when it happens. Its funny how we remember exactly what caused it each time. I have PBed salmon, bagel, salad, and rissoto. I thought Pasta would be a problem - but if it is not al dente and has sauce and I eat slowly and chew- it is fine.

Pain is a great teacher! I am learning each day what my limitations are.

Over the past few days I have been Sliming a lot.. I have noticed that it comes from not chewing properly and drinking too quickly. I have made a real effort not wait for at least two minutes before I take the next bite and then do not drink anything for another 20 minutes as well..

Now I can also add PLUMS to my list. I did it again today eating a plum.

I just get so busy at work that I forget to pay attention! YIKES!!!!

In fifteen months I have only PB's once and that was on hot dogs mixed with baked Beans. I had left overs from the Fourth of July. I will not have hot dogs ever again. I have slimed really really bad and felt like I was going to throw up (saliva rushing into mouth, queasy stomach) but only the once a PB and I just assume keep it that way!!!

My band seems to constrict when I am not eating. So when it is meal time, it takes a while to get the band to loosen up enough to eat and pass food. Does this happen to anyone else?

I usually try a few bites and then stop for a while and wait. Eventually the band opens up more. My food gets cold though.

Thanks all you PBers... I had my first PB and if I had not read all your experiences I would have paniced... It was so scary and painful.. I remembered all I had read and when the slime came I knew what it was. It was not fun. I will chew my chicken until there is nothing left. I eat chicken all the time but I was doing something else and eating and I guess I can't walk and chew gum at the same time... I want to say Thanks....... I really need you guys... I wish this kind of support was around when I had my kids....I'm also glad you are willing to share....

Okay I didn't know what it was but I do now. I burp all the time and even when I wasn't banded. I was banded Aug 5th 3 weeks now I burp all the time even if I drink. I have acid reflux so I don't know if that is why too. I do eat to fast always have. I am worried that my band is going to slip or something. I did the other night get a piece of chicken stuck. I was talking and cutting chicken and I just popped it in my mouth and didn't chew...I was freaked out and oh did it hurt. So of course I tried to drink Water which only mad it worse and I guess the "slime" your talkjing about came up. I did throw the piece of chicken up. I was Like now...i'm so scared I did something to my band.

Okay yesterday my band bothered me today I wake up and it's still tender there but it doesn't hurt me like it did just yesterday does anyone know if this is normal. My mind is going crazy I think I ate to fast and made the band slip and now that's why is doesn't hurt. Plus I get my first fill in 4-5 weeks.....I guess it is so different from before your band is filled? I never feel full but I only eat a 1/2 a cup to 3/4 of a cup that's ...that's all I am suppose to eat and lumpy food now. I know I went off the subject of PB but I have so many questions about if I am doing things right.

I just had to email when I read the words "heavy slime" that is exactly what I have been trying to descibe to my surgeon in Tijuana and I don't think she understood what I was trying to tell her. this stuff won't let anything through - on bad days not even Water. If I spit into my sink strainer it will hold water for quite some time. Do you have any remedies? I would really like to know how you are handling it.

Thanks, Corrie

I have the same problem but I can't even take a couple of bites - I have to take one small bite and then see if my band will let it through - mornings are the worst but if I am under stress (am alot) it can get tight on me too. I used to eat when stressed and that was a big reason for my excess weight - now I have a really loud alarm bell that says if you want to eat, you are going to have to relax!

I asked to have my band real tight and some days its hard to deal with but I am more than half way and I was banded on 3/15/08. Good luck and thanks for posting.

I've been banded since 6/16/08 and have PB'd about 5 or 6 times but 1 time was really bad and I actually pucked 3 to 4 times before I was finally comfortable and I believe I just ate too much and have been really conscious about how much I eat and have found that if I hiccup STOP, and even spit out what's in your mouth. It definately takes learning and reteaching yourself.

Hmmmm I do PBing almost three to four days out of the week. I catch myself eating too fast. Or not chewing all the way. It feels better when it just comes back up.

So Marjon9 how are you doing? how is your weight? OKay so I was banded Aug 5th had first fill Oct 3rd and the week before Oct 3rd I was 20 lbs and as of today I have lost inches but still down 20 lbs. When did your weight start to move? Or did it take awhile?

I just forced myself to read every post in this thread to educate myself and also become more conscious when I eat. Since my fill (1.8 in a 4 cc), I had been PBing several times a day - everyday. However I have now learned that there are things I can do to greatly reduce or even eliminate this behavior. Most have been listed here - go very easy in the morning, loosen up with warm liquid, take some very slow and small "starter" bites to loosen you up etc... A lot of it for me to be honest is my stubborness. If I want to eat something and the band will not let me then I want to still try and eat it. After three months with the band, I am finally allowing myself to become friends with the band and surrender to it more. Does that sound ridiculous? Thanks for everyone's support.

I would love to know how often you PB?

Just twice since I have been banded. (Both at the same meal.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
