Why people and studies are so negative about lapband

Recommended Posts

I know some of my issue are he choice in foods I eat, but my options are severe pain or puking or eating food that is not as good for me but digests ok, the other problem I notice is, if I eat. food that does digest ok there is no full feeling from the band, So basically all the band has done for me is forced me into a diet of less then good food. For me I'm at the point that I feel the band the was a big mistake, and does nothing other then make me sick, it doesn't make me feel full with less food and its imparting my ability to eat nutritious food since solid Proteins are pretty much not a choice.

But the band isn't supposed to make you feel full, in fact if you're eating until you're full you're likely over eating. The band isn't supposed to physically stop you from eating anything, either. It sound like you are expecting the band to do things it simply wasn't meant to do. Here's a link that may help you a bit: http://drsimpson.net/fills/Lap-band-eating/lap-band-not-restriction/lap-band-and-restriction.html

If you're vomiting and can't eat healthy foods because of the band, it sounds to me like it's likely too tight. You may want to talk to your surgeon.

Best wishes

When I went to all the meeting and pre op stuff it was explained that once the pouch is full I will feel full, If the band doesn't make u feel anything to signal your full and it doesn't prevent u from eating things it serves no purpose, Anyone with a little will power can go on a diet of 1000 calories and. Make sure u eat decent food without having a silly band surgically implanted that makes u puke.......l if it does nothing why have we all opted for the torture device?

All of my pre op info is completely different t then the info in this link, I was told you eat, it goes to the pouch and gives you a full feeling and should then take 4-6 hrs to then feel hungry again, And the hospital/ surgeon are supposedly top in the nation out here near Chicago .....l, so now I'm totally lost based on info you guys have here in the forums...... Makes no sense, I can choke and puke on a bite size piece of chicken but I can eat a bag of Doritos without blinking. And no choking

You're choking on a piece of chicken but able to eat Doritos because you're too tight. Doritos are slider foods and slider foods go down always and easy. This is exactly why a band that's too tight leads to weight gain.

As for the band...it has tons of use when you use it correctly. I'm sorry your surgeon didn't properly educate you. Unfortunately, just because someone is a doctor doesn't mean they're a good one. The band is supposed to keep you satisfied on less food for longer periods of time. Isn't the fact you're expecting it to stop you from eating and make you feel full, yet it's not working, a clue that something is wrong? Like...maybe your expectations?

food for thought. Good luck.

The only reason insurance companies even cover the procedure is because it is cost effective. They are after all in business not to loose money. The Lapband has been proven to help individuals loose weight and therefore prevent many other weight related illnesses down the line.

I know and have known something is wrong, I went back to my surgeon and all he said was. " stop eating bad food " but didn't offer any more of a solution to being able to eat the good food, so all I could do was rely on myself and the info I was provided. So i am a bit reluctant to go back to my surgeon but I have no alternatives to go to, I guess I'll make an appointment for a slight unfill and adjust my diet and see how it goes

I like my band "Tight".....after my last fill it took me 3-4 weeks for ME to adjust to the band....

I feel the band can be put on a scale of 1 to 10....1 being no band at all....and 10 being ridiculous!

People who are always complaining about being hungry, overeating, not loosing any weight, etc, are down around 2-4 on the scale, mostly newbies just starting out. No restriction at all other than post-op irritation, etc.

The majority of people on this forum are in the 4-6 range, 50% band, 50% self control, discipline....these are the people who say it is hard work, the band is only a "Tool", takes discipline, need to follow the rules, measure food, count calories, etc.....I also feel it would be just as easy for people to fail, as well as succeed in this category because much of their efforts is based upon themselves, as well as the band....

These people are still "Dieting" and use the band as a deterrent....

And then, there are people like me (not many here) that would be in the 8-9 range on the scale....

I CANNOT overeat...it is physically impossible without pain and spitting it all up.....

I have NEVER felt full as has been mentioned, it is something different.....

No matter what you put in front of me.....I will only be able to eat 2-4 swallows and I am finished....

I do not diet.....I do not worry about calorie counting......I have NO CONTROL over what the band is doing to me....what I needed to do is learn to live with it...change my lifestyle..."LISTEN" to the band.....

Since my food intake is very, very limited...it is important that whatever I do eat it is Good Food Choices....there are foods I simply cannot eat anymore, not that I care....red meat, rice, flour products, deep fried breaded foods....ALL of which is not good for me in the first place.....

Get all my daily Protein, even if liquid, daily Water requirements, Vitamins, supplements and exercise.......all essential....Food takes a back seat...

It would NEVER be my place to tell other people what they should or should not do.....but over the years I have witnessed many people who, after a few fills, panic the first time they get stuck and run and get a un-fill....then 2 -3 weeks later these same people are complaining they are not loosing weight....

If people are not willing to let the band do what it was designed to do, and if people are not willing to change...then these people will never be successful....unless of course they have good self discipline and fall into that middle category.....good dieters! ( I have never been good at dieting)

I have not gotten stuck in over a year now....but in the adjustment phase I got stuck quite often until I learned my lessons.....

I cannot imagine how on earth I can ever fail at this....short of getting a un-fill, or some medical emergency I have no control over....

I cringe every time I read "The Band Does Not Work"...but it is not my pace to tell othr people they are right or wrong....I can just state what is true for me......

And lastly...there is a entire different population of people on this website when I first joined....they have all moved on, completing their journey and being successful....they have no reason to come around here anymore so you don't hear from them.....

I can understand why...this forum is made up of "newbies" with the same problems over and over again....it is very hard to hear the same thing everyday........ I stayed away for a while, and will probably need to take a break again...but I do belong to other groups where the people have been banded for a while, and we support each other on a different level......

Ok, so much for venting on a Monday Morning.....

I also use a doc near chicago, and would be happy to recommend him if you needed.

I feel so bad for you that you were misinformed. Some doctors really are misleading and quite frankly shouldn't be allowed to perform weight loss surgeries because they falsely represent the facts, and this eventually hurts the patients.

Hello, Hippocratic oath anyone??

This is probably the best reply I've ever heard, thanks for your response, I don't really want and unfill but from the replays of other people it seemed to be the popular vote, I'm going to start out measuring my food for a while until I get a handle on things, from what my dr said with the last visit is that my band is on the tighter side of the scale

My Dr. Is Dr. Simpson from the link provided. I don't know of this will help you at all, but he specifically tells patients NOT to eat dry foods. They do cause choking. For example, he told me I should never eat at Paradise Bakery because the chicken is dried out and soaked in sauce. Now, I was only banded in May, but I'm down 62 pounds, and I've never vomited. Not once.

I wish you the best, and I hope you find peace.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
