Hello,

I had lap band with pilcation last month. My surgery was scheduled as out-patient, but the doctor nicked my spleen and was unable to get the bleeding stopped. I ended up losing my spleen and spending two days in ICU. I have lost 30 pounds in less than 2 months without any fills yet. I'm concerned about my health right now though. I've had several shots for prevention. Anyone else have any complications during their surgery?

Glad to hear that your surgery went well. I have mixed feelings about mine right now due to losing my spleen.

You're the first I've heard of with this complication.

Really sorry you have had this happen.

What does Dr say about losing your spleen as far as long term?

Really, really sorry!

I know that's gotta be scary! When we read all of those precautions and warnings and stuff I know I always just briefly scan it because I never think it would happen to me so I'm sorry that happened to you. What a shocker. Keep us posted as to what the doctor says now about it. Try to keep your spirits up, maybe it will be all smooth sailing from here out!

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about you losing your spleen, but I've lived without my spleen for 8 years now. I had mine removed after the neurosuegeon I was seeing for the bulging disks in my lower back. On one of the MRIs he noticed leasions on my spleen. They asked had I ever been in an accident or something and I said no. So since the spleen is an organ that they cannot biopsy, I had to make a choice to live with those leasions or have it removed. I prayed and elected to have it removed. I have to have a flu shot every year (I'm in that group of folks that HAVE to have the shot..not the mist). If I get the flu, I have to be hospitalized and receive antibotics thru IV. Now I gt common colds, but I stay clear of anyone who has the flu. Oh and I have to have a pneumonia shot every 10 years. THat's it. I live a normal life without my spleen.I just make sure whatever doctor I'm seeing knows I don't have one.

Hope my story helps ease your mind. You'll be fine. PRaying for healing. I'll be banded on 30 January..can't wait!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
