Advice on how to get approved?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have highmark BCBS (railroad ins). I called and requested my insurance contract details concerning lap band, they will cover 100% if your BMI is over 40 or if you have a comorb with a BMI of 35. My PCP preformed labs and I have high cholesterol, asthma, insulin resistance, and my BMI is close to 39.7, is there anything anyone can recommend for me to do or document? Do you think I will be denied for just finding my cholesterol? I have been on rx diet pills off and on for over 5 years. Thanks in advance.

Go back through your medical records for the last 5-10 years. See if you can get access to your doctor's (any doctor you've seen) notes that document your weight, or better yet, your BMI. Showing that you've had a long history of obesity will help. I also documented all of the weight loss programs that I tried and eventually failed. Like, with Weight Watchers, I even sent in copies of my weight trackers. My insurance company approved within a week -- and I have absolutely no co-morbidities (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugars, etc. are all excellent), but my BMI was just over 40%, and that's what helped. If you can get a letter of medical necessity from your primary care physician, that would be great. Good luck!!! :)

I would recommend getting a sleep study done, because you may have sleep apnea, and that's a comorbidity that reduces the bmi requirement to 35. I don't think high cholesterol will count. I did not have a 40 bmi for a full 2 year period, so aetna initially denied me. However, my surgeon did a peer-to-peer review with aetna and explained that the period in which my bmi was below 40 was when i was on diet pills (phentermine), and i got approved. In the interim between the denial and the peer-to-peer review, i did the sleep study. After i found out i was approved for the lapband, i learned that i had sleep apnea. Had i done the sleep study earlier, i probably would never have gotten denied.

Wow! Thanks guys this is some wonderful advice!! My BMI has not been close to 40 but for just less than a year because like others I was doing diet pills and weight watchers at the same time.

Okay, now I'm totally worried bc my BMI has waivers from 34-42 over the past two years granted I was taking phentermine and tompax during this time. I wonder if insurance will deny me?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
