Paying with 401k

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on withdrawling the money for the surgery out of my 401k. Does anyone know the penalties for withdrawling from a 401k? I figured I'd ask here before I googled it and got lost.

From my understanding, they will take 20% out of the total that you take out. 10% will go directly to the gov't and the other 10% is a penalty for early withdrawl. I am doing the same on Jan 1st. Waiting till then so that I may defer the taxes till next year.

I had heard that certain medical expenses might be excluded from the penalty but you should talk to an accountant or tax professional before doing this. Have you considered taking all or part of the money from your 401 (k) as a loan instead of an outright withdrawal? That way, you don't pay the tax on early withdrawal and you don't pay the penalty. The loan is repaid from your salary so you are paying yourelf the interest and these loans don't appear on your credit report. The only downside is that if you leave your job, y0u have to pay back the outstanding amount within 60 days or you are charged the penalty and interest. This may be a better choice financially.

Good luck.

If you take money out of your 401k you will have to pay ordinary income taxes. The money you put in is pre tax therefore you have to pay taxes. You also have to pay a 10 percent penalty. Talk to an accountant or tax lawyer if you can!

I used my 401k to pay for my surgery. You can do it as a loan or a withdrawal for medical expenses. It will offset if you claim the medical cost on ur taxes bc u will be taxed if u do it as a withdrawal.

If you have an active 401k it may be smarter to take a loan against it instead of withdrawing it... Loans are usually no more then a few % for the interest and you avoid penalties.... Then the repay, ent comes right out of your chck. Check with your benefits administrator.

Accountant in the house:

401k withdrawal is subject to:

the plan penalty ( whatever the plan penalizes for a withdrawal. Check if they wave it if used for medical)

Income tax ( withdrawal amount multiplied by your tax bracket federal and state. Remember that your tax bracket may be higher now that you have this lump sum distribution from your 401k)

Federal penalty of 10%

If in California additional 2%

If you itemize then you can take the deduction. The deduction is anything 7.5% over your adjusted gross income. So if AGI is $100,000 then anything over $7,500 is deductible.

You have to figure that about 45-50% of what you will withdraw is gonna be eaten up by taxes and penalties.

Taking out a loan is a great way to go IF your plan allows for it. There is interest calculated but guess what? You pay the interest to yourself as it all goes into your 401k account.

Either way, you should run it by your accountant before making the step.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
