considering the band

Recommended Posts

Well, I've been looking into weight loss surgery now for a while. I had a close friend a few Yrs back get gastric bypass & he hated it. There was a local lady I knew who also had the same procedure done and she died of complications so I know that I never wanted to try that especially with having a 13mo old son and a husband.

I am 22yrs old and have been heavy my entire life. Losing 15-80lbs and then gaining it back plus some. Recently I was at my highest of 447lbs and a size 34 jean. 5xl shirt

I'm currently 385lbs and size 30/32( much gut hangs already ) and a 4xl shirt.

I am 6"1 and a larger boned person. My lowest was 260ish and a size 16/17 & L shirts

I'm tired of the diet pills. Back pain. The fat and flab and the high blood pressure and seizures from it. I am pre diabetic and was diabetic while pregnant so I know If nothing changes I'll develop it again.

I'm currently trying to get insurance as I am without it and unemployed. My husband has insurance thru work but it's expensive.

Anything anyone can tell me about their insurance, weight, things to know, good bad the ugly, excess skin, everything. Absolutely everything. I will be attaching a self shot at my current weight.

First, my heart goes out to you. I also have struggled with my weight my entire life so I understand how hard it is.

I got the Lap Band surgery almost a year ago. I weighed in at 421 pounds but I'm only 5'3 so I was wearing a size 7x. I've lost 175 pounds since then and I'm now wearing a 1x.

I still have weight to lose but I know I'll get there. Honestly, my life couldn't be more different than it was a year ago. Getting the band is the best decision I've ever made for myself.

As far as skin, ugh, I have TONS of it. I'm getting a Tummy Tuck in a couple months because of the extreme tummy skin hang and hoping to get my breasts reduced and lifted next fall. But, excess skin aside, it's still worth it. I'd rather have all the extra skin than all the extra fat.

My best advice to you is to thoroughly do your homework before making a decision. Too many people seem to rush into this surgery ignorant to the facts. They think it's a magic fix for fat and that isn't the case at all. It takes work and determination to be successful with the band. The band is an amazing tool, but only that, just a tool. The work is always ours to do be successful with it.

Best wishes to you with whatever you decide :)

Excellent post Mis... I would only add the band is a permanant tool and you must be willing to change your eating habits and lifestyle for it to be successfull. If you are willing to do that this might be a wonderful solution for you and your future. I wish you all the best as you move forward towards a decision.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
