Starting Optifast tomorrow

Recommended Posts

I just got back from the doctor's office. I passed the psych test(yeah) and got to see the nurtitionist about starting the Optifast tomorrow. 5 shakes a day with one sensible meal. They do mean sensible, like fish, chicken or tofu, vegs and a fruit. They also recommend starting the exercise regimen now and do expect me to get up to 45 -60 mins cardio 5-7 days a week from now until 2 months after surgery. Just needed to vent. I am nervous but plan to do it! 30 days until my surgery!!!:clap2: :clap2:

Thanks Jesse! I am beginning right now. I forgot to mention no caffeine either. I think I am getting rid of all my vices at one time. No smoking, drinking, eating or caffeine. Wow! Interestingly enough, the psychologist said I didn't have a food addiction. I am going to become an exercise addict!!!!

I hear ya, Amy! I know I have some type of abnormality to weigh 260 lbs! The Optifast is pretty good. I chose the ready to drink form and chicken Soup. My doctor requires us to pay 2500.00 program fee which includes the psych testing and counseling, the nutrionist and counseling weekly and the pre-op Optifast. The counseling is available for a lifetime. They are very efficient. They even gave me my post-op appointments for the next 2 years! Yes, YEARS! So far so good today!

Hi Jen,

I just started me pre-op diet yesterday and I am sooooo jealous of you, lol. My doctor has us go to physician's weight loss center and get our liquid diet. I would love it if he allowed me one real meal per day, then I think I could get through this no problem, but he doesn't. Fortunately, they do have a chicken Soup that we are allowed and it seems somewhat like real food. Right now, for lunch, I am sitting here drinking a Healthwise kiwi strawberry twist and let me just say it is so NASTY! The chocolate Meal Replacement shake was bearable, but this twist drink is just disgusting. I am plugging my nose while drinking it.

When is your surgery date? I am having mine on the 28th and cannot wait!

Good luck with your liquids!

Susan,

My surgery is May 8th. You'll be in bandland before me! I tried PWL laast year. That stuff was nasty and I didn't really lose any significant weight. hang in there, you only have 15 days to go!

Shackdog,

You're even closer to bandland! good luck and I can't wait for all of us to be on 'the other side'!

My surgery is also May 8th. You sure brought it to reality by counting the days and saying we only have 15 days to go....my pre-op is April 26.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
