Carb Confusion

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I disagree. Complex carbs are what fill me up, keep me full, give me lots of energy. I need those AND Protein. To cut one out doesnt make me feel good.

And if you're eating properly, you shouldnt have to take Metamucil or add Benefibre to anything!

Protein is not magic either in that it somehow miraculously "preserves" muscle. You WILL lose muscle as you lose weight, you need to exercise to preserve and create muscle. Protein is a building block and as long as you get enough, there's no real benefit in eating a lot extra and the recommendations you see for 80 to 100 grams for women are way above what is actually required.

I agree with Wheetsin personally, I think the recommendation for high protein has a lot to do with the fast weight loss it produces much less to do with what is actually healthy all round for the human body.

For me, doing low carb isn't just about never touching anything with carbs again. It's about eating the right TYPE and more importantly the right AMOUNT of carbs. For instance, now that I have the band I will fill a 7" plate with half Protein, then 1/4 (dark in color, low carb) vegetables and the other 1/4 with some kind complex carb. Eat your Protein first, then the low-carb vegetables, if you have room, eat the complex carb last. That's my version of doing low carb and it simplifies it for me. :rolleyes2:

Like the chart....makes alot of sense...what do you consider complex carbs?

A complex carb is anything wholegrain...such as wholegrain bread, oats, brown rice, etc. Most bandsters find these kinds of foods intolerable since they get stuck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
